The win for Xavi's side also came via a goal from Fermín, with Heorhii Sudakov on target for the visitors.

Torres gave Barcelona the lead in the 28th minute with a volley to the lower left corner. The hosts wasted little time in building on that and doubled their lead eight minutes later through Fermín, who saw his effort hit the woodwork before nestling in the net, Torres with the assist.

Sudakov then pulled one back for Shakhtar Donetsk after 62 minutes, with defender Irakli Azarovi this time the provider.

Although it didn't ultimately impact the result, Fermín did spurn good chances for Barcelona in the game.

Torres has netted two times in the competition this season, the second successive appearance with a goal for the side's joint top scorer. Fermín and Sudakov opened their Champions League accounts, netting a first competition goal in their 13th and third appearances, respectively.

INJURY CONCERN:

Both sides saw players suffer injury problems - João Félix first having to come off for Barcelona in the 74th minute before Shakhtar D lost Taras Stepanenko in stoppage time at the end of the game.
