Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky on Monday expressed his thanks to the United States for its “unprecedented assistance” in the face of the Russian invasion, a day after meeting in Kiev with US Secretaries of State and Defense Antony Blinken and Lloyd Austin, respectively.
“I want to thank President (US, Joe) Biden personally and on behalf of all the Ukrainian people for his leadership in supporting Ukraine and for his clear personal position,” said Zelensky, according to a statement published by the Ukrainian presidency on its website.
“I want to thank the entire American people, as well as Congress for their support in both chambers and both parties. We see it. We are sorry,” said the Ukrainian president, who conveyed to Blinken and Austin the importance of his visit at this “crucial” time for Kiev.
The Ukrainian Presidency has revealed that the priorities of this phase of the conflict were addressed during Sunday's meeting, including the need to receive military aid, strengthen sanctions against Russia, financial support for Kiev and security guarantees in order to end the conflict.
Zelensky stressed that the 3.4 billion dollars (about 3.17 billion euros) given by the United States in the area of defense is the largest contribution in this regard and stressed that it helps to enhance the capabilities of the country's Armed Forces.
It also emphasized the need to strengthen sanctions against Moscow. “We understand what are the next steps that need to be taken along this path and we count on the support of our partners,” said the Ukrainian president.
On the other hand, he stressed the importance of expanding opportunities for Ukrainian goods to access the US market in order to promote the economy of the European country and to collaborate in reconstruction efforts, while reiterating that Kiev considers Washington as a leader among possible countries that provide guarantees of security to Ukraine.
