Instagram has an option integrated into its platform to identify phishing emails and spam. This option allows you to view the official emails sent by Instagram in the last 14 days from “Settings”.
To view emails sent by Instagram, click on the three horizontal stripes in the upper right corner and then tap Settings. From there go to Security and then click on Instagram Emails.
Emails sent in the last 14 days related to login and account security are located under Security, while to view the rest you have to click on the Other tab.
In addition, official Instagram messages about account security will only be sent to the email address and will not be received via Direct messages.
Why is it so important to distinguish between emails sent by the company and others that are fake?
Cyberattackers often send fake emails from alleged companies or entities where the user has accounts or profiles created. This type of technique is known as email spoofing, which is nothing other than the creation and distribution of fake emails that simulate the dominance of a well-known company.
It is one of the ways to perform phishing or phishing. Sometimes they are made by sending messages to mobile phones, or phone calls. In the latter case, there is talk of vishing.
With the excuse that the user has to update information or correct an error, he is sent a link that redirects to a fake page that emulates being the official site.
In this case, for example, the user would see an interface like that of Instagram where they are asked to enter their login credentials. By doing this, you give attackers the combination of email with password to enter your account and thus end up losing your access.
It could also be the gateway for other types of attacks on other profiles where you have the same combination of password and password or even to carry out types of extortive hijacking, in which information is stolen and the victim is asked to pay a ransom to regain access to their data.
How to avoid scams on Instagram
It is important to be informed about the attackers' modus operandi. In addition, it is key to have a strong password and activate the second factor of authentication that adds an extra layer of security to the account. To do so, you can follow the steps mentioned here.
On the other hand, it is necessary to be alert and distrustful of the following situations, as recommended by the platform:
1. People who don't know each other or who, could pretend to be acquaintances, and ask for money through the app
2. Accounts that ask for money or gift cards to be sent to them in exchange for loans, prizes, or other winnings.
3. Be wary of profiles that ask for a sum of money with the promise of helping in applying for a job.
4. Accounts that claim to represent large companies, organizations or public figures and are not verified.
5. People who claim to be from the security area of Instagram and who ask for your account information (such as username or password) or who offer you account verification services.
6. People who ask to continue chatting on a channel other than Instagram that is less public or less secure (for example, another email).
7. Users who claim to have friends or family in emergency situations.
8. Messages that appear to be coming from a friend or company you know that asks to click on a suspicious link.
9. Accounts that are of little age on Instagram.
10. Be wary of messages or posts with misspellings or grammatical errors.
11. Persons or accounts that ask for a prize to be claimed.
12. Individuals or accounts that offer items at an extreme discount.
