Mexico won its first gold medal at the Poomsae Taekwondo World Cup in South Korea

So far, the national team has managed to win eight medals in the contest: one gold, one silver and six bronze medals

During the Poomsae Taekwondo World Championships 2022, held in Goyang, South Korea, since April 18, Mexico has demonstrated its talent by winning various medals in different modalities. So far, he has won eight medals: one gold, one silver and six bronze.

One of the most recent achievements took place last Saturday, April 23, when the Mexican duo formed by William de Jesús Arroyo Reyes and Seo Hyun Cecilia Lee Kim won first place in the freestyle couple final of over 17 years after beating their opponents from the Philippines, being the first gold medal won by the national team.

Likewise, William Arroyo won the silver medal in the individual freestyle +17 category. With this victory, it is the third time that the native of Oaxaca has conquered the golden metal. The first was in Lima in 2016 in individual competitions, while the second was at the 2018 World Cup in Chinese Taipei. For her part, Cecilia Lee managed to win a gold medal and two bronze medals in that same 2018 Championship.

On the other hand, six bronze medals were won in mixed, individual and team modalities. In the Poomsae modality, Mexicans Anabell Salmerón, Violeta Chavez and Arlette Carrasco showed their talent by taking third place in the category over 30 years old.

For their part, the duo composed of Azael Gallegos and Sofía Lee managed to win bronze as a mixed pair, who shared it with the competitors from Vietnam. Meanwhile, Brisa Alexandra Alekc Hernandez placed third, along with Mikayla Xiong from the United States, in the individual event.

The fourth bronze medal was won by the mixed freestyle team over the age of 17, made up of Dayra Comparan, Diego Alatorre, Marco Arroyo, Andrea Heinze and Miguel Díaz. Meanwhile, the fifth was won by Marisa Arellano and José Cervera in the freestyle category under 17 years of age.

The last bronze medal was won by the formist Enrique Luna in the men's individual category under the age of 60. The medals were presented by the head of the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport (Conade), Ana Gabriela Guevara.

The mode of Poomsae consists of a simulation of combat against two or more opponents in which defense and attack techniques are combined, so coordination, balance, breath control and synchronization are essential to make any move.

It should be remembered that since 1973, every odd year this Taekwondo World Championship is organized, the highest competition in this discipline, which is organized by the World Taekwondo Federation (WT). From 1987 onwards, women's competitions were also included.

For this edition, the Poomsae World Cup achieved a record entry, with 784 athletes and 194 officers coming from 62 countries around the world: 20 Asians, 21 Europeans, 14 Americans, 7 Africans and one from Oceania.

On the other hand, on May 3 and 4, 2022, the Pan American Championship will be held in the Dominican Republic, where the Mexican team will seek to defend their championship title after their victory in Cancún last year, in which they won 16 medals: four gold, seven silver and five bronze.

In this competition, compatriots Amelia Espinoza, Anel Féliz, Carolina Velázquez, Victorio Heredia, Cesar Rodriguez, Carlos Navarro, Rene Lizarraga, Bryan Salazar, Daniel Souza, Fabiola Villegas, Paloma Garcia, Leslie Soltero, Brandon Plaza, Iker Casas, Carlos Sansores and José María Pastor will compete.
