Mexico City Government has invested 60 million pesos for the maintenance and care of palm trees

Despite the fact that the Government of Mexico City has had to knock down at least 189 dead palm trees in the last month due to a fungal plague, the capital's Ministry of the Environment (Sedema) said Saturday that 60 million pesos have been invested for the maintenance and comprehensive care of a total of 12,302 specimens.

According to the agency, with these resources 300 palm trees have been cleaned and strengthened with the application of plant endotherapy, 200 traps have been placed for insect monitoring and sanitary pruning has been carried out on 1,729 of them.

However, 492 were identified that no longer have a solution, consequently, they will be replaced with specimens of tree species from 4 to 6 meters high. While the waste will be transferred to the Nezahualcoyotl Nursery, where it will be treated correctly.

The objective of the program is to combat is to curb the mortality of palm trees, to control mistletoe, which affects most tree species in the city, to combat pests, such as barks that affect cedars and pines, and to detect and combat other pests and diseases.

A group of experts from institutions such as the Postgraduate College, the National Institute for Forestry, Agricultural and Livestock Research, the National Forestry Commission, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the National Health, Safety and Quality Service participates in the comprehensive palm tree management program Agrialimentaria, the Autonomous University of Chapingo and private companies, Sedema said in a statement.
