“Tonight's result represents in itself a resounding victory,” said Marine Le Pen, who said she had “no resentment or rancor.” The candidate expressed her “deep appreciation to all those who trusted us in the first round (...) and to all those who accompanied us in the second round”.

On Sunday, the French entrusted a new five-year term to centrist president Emmanuel Macron in the ballotage against Marine Le Pen, who despite losing achieved the best result of the extreme right in a presidential election in the country.

According to early estimates, the candidate of La República en Marcha (LREM) won between 57.6% and 58.2% of votes, a narrower victory than in 2017 when he defeated his rival in the National Group (RN) with 66.1% of votes to 33.9%.
