Nuevo León is under the cloak of a femicide crisis: a panorama that the Governor, Samuel García, has already been overcome during his first months in power.

Maria Fernanda Contreras, Maria Jessica Karina Ramirez Ruvalcaba and Debanhi Escobar are some of the cases that have once again shown (with greater force) the wave of violence that threatens women every day neoleonese.

Despite Garcia's promise to “protect women,” the reality is that victims of femicide have skyrocketed in the first quarter of 2022 in comparison with 2021.

According to figures from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), Nuevo León recorded 21 femicides from January to March this year: 11 cases more than was reported in the same period in 2021 (10).

In this vein, February was the most violent month with 9 cases, followed by March with 7 and January with 5 - figures that would show that at least one femicide was committed per week in the first quarter of 2022.

This was also reflected in the SESNSP “Report on Violence Against Women” (last updated from January-February), in which Nuevo León positioned itself as the third entity with the most cases only behind Veracruz (15) and the State of Mexico (22).

By that date, nine of its municipalities were among the 100 with the most cases in the entire Republic, with Guadeloupe being the third highest in the country, with three cases. Ciénega de Flores followed, who ranked 19th with two cases; Monterrey in 20th with two; Salinas Victoria in 21st with two; García in 78th; General Escobedo in 79; General Zuazua in 80; Juárez in 81 and Pesquería in 82.

However, with the sum of recent data from the “Criminal Incidence of Common Jurisdictions” report, Nuevo León would become the second state with the highest number of femicides, tied with Veracruz - which also accumulated 21 cases after a rise of 6 cases in March.

However, it should be noted that women in the state ruled by García Sepúlveda are also threatened by attempted femicides - which showed an almost double rebound from February to March.

According to the Penal Code, an attempt to commit femicide occurs when the aggressor carries out acts aimed at taking the life of a woman but without achieving its commitment for causes beyond the control of the perpetrator.

Figures from the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) of Nuevo León has recorded 54 attempted femicides so far in 2022, that is, on more than 50 occasions an attempt was made to deprive a woman of her life.

In this regard, January and February recorded 15 incidents each. However, by March the figure skyrocketed to 24 cases.

It should be noted that the cumulative figure (54) was slightly higher than that reported in the same period in 2021, when there were 52 attempted femicides; by the end of that year, Nuevo León accumulated 306 attempted femicides.
