The aspirants to succeed the panist Francisco Javier García Cabeza de Vaca face the entity's greatest challenge, which is that of insecurity, since for years there has been a climate of violence generated by drug trafficking groups operating in the region.
Currently, the problem of insecurity is focused on the border with the United States, where the municipalities of Matamoros and Reynosa tend to be the scene of constant blockades and shootings due to the readjustments of organized crime.
After several years of constant struggle between the so-called Gulf Cartel (CDG) and Los Zetas, this border entity has suffered the fragmentation of these criminal groups into new organizations such as “The Northeast Cartel”, Zetas Old School, Los Metros, Los Cyclones, Los Rojos and Las Panteras.
Despite arrests such as that of Juan Gerardo Treviño Chávez, alias “El Huevo”, the alleged leader of the Northeast Cartel, the presence of several criminal cells has hampered total pacification in Tamaulipas because they have extended their activities to kidnapping and extortion.
Due to its geographical location, this state is part of the so-called “small border” with the United States, becoming a strategic route for drug trafficking, migrant trafficking and fuel theft.
César Verástegui Ostos from the PAN, PRI and PRD coalition is 55 years old and is an agronomist.
In 1995, he joined the ranks of the PAN and later held the chairmanship of the Municipal Steering Committee in Xicoténcatl.
This allowed him to win the municipal presidency of Xicoténcatl in 2002. Subsequently, in 2006 he became a federal deputy.
Already in 2011, he became municipal president of Xicoténcatl for the second time and in 2014 he jumped as leader of the PAN State Steering Committee in Tamaulipas.
In October 2016, Governor Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca appointed him Secretary General of Government, a position he resigned in January 2022 with the intention of becoming the successor of the panist.
Américo Villarreal Anaya, the standard-bearer of the alliance composed of Morena, PVEM and PT, is a current licensed senator.
The politician who joined the ranks of Morena in 2016 is currently 63 years old and is a surgeon with a master's degree in cardiology.
Most of his professional life was dedicated to the public sector in health matters and it was until 2016 that he had the opportunity to become a Senator under the colors of Morena.
Arturo Díez Gutiérrez Navarro, nominated by Movimiento Ciudadano (MC), is 59 years old and has a training in Agronomy and Zootechnics.
His political career included the municipal presidency of Ciudad Victoria in the period 2008-2010.
He later conducted himself in the business sector, so he was a member of the Employer's Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex), the Confederation of Industrial Chambers (Concamin), as well as the National Chamber of Commerce (Canaco) in Ciudad Victoria.
The state has 3 million 527 thousand 735 inhabitants, of which 2,738,954 are registered on the electoral roll - based on the court of January 31 - and they are the ones who will be able to go to the polls to renew the government.
