A traffic police officer suffered a stab attack while directing traffic in the North Pan-American Highway, off Trapiche Avenue. According to witnesses, 19-year-old Diego Sandi Macullama stabbed 30-year-old Petty Officer Maria Mayra Villarreal Tasayco three times in search of taking her gun away.
The young man's actions were narrated by TV Peru. According to the State channel, Sandi Macullama pierced the officer's back and neck. After the onslaught, he was detained by passers-by in the area, who came close to lynching him if two members of the Peruvian National Police did not appear. Meanwhile, another group of people helped Villarreal Tasayco and transferred it to the Jesús del Norte Clinic, located in Independencia. The Republic reported that she was diagnosed with multiple trauma, open chest trauma and severe anaemia.
“Regrettable what happened today, in the morning hours. The non-commissioned officer was carrying out her traffic police service between Trapiche and the Pan-American Highway [North], and for reasons that will still be the subject of investigation, she suffers the assault of this subject with a knife that has caused injuries to her back and one at the height of her neck,” said General Carlos Malaver, chief of the Directorate of Transport, Traffic and Road Safety of the PNP.
“The subject has already been arrested with the support of some cleaners and waste pickers. He has been taken to the Santa Luzmila police station, but will later be referred to the Dirincri because of the magnitude of the incident. He doesn't talk, he keeps silent, we don't know the motive for the fact, that will be known in the course of the investigations that will be carried out hand in hand with the Public Ministry,” added the police chief.
Diego Sandi Macullama, a native of Ucayali, revealed in the police interrogation that his plan was to commit a robbery in a market, together with an accomplice. He will now be reported for attempted murder with subsequent serious stab injuries or attempted femicide.
