Spiderhead is the title of the new fiction by Chris Hemsworth, who has just appeared in the new trailer for the Marvel Studios film, Thor: Love and Thunder. The film is based on the short story published in The New Yorker, “Escape From Spiderhead”, by George Saunders. The film is a dark yet fun psychological thriller, directed by Joseph Kosinski (TRON: Legacy and Top Gun: Maverick), scripted by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Deadpool, Zombieland).
Hemsworth plays Steve Abnesti, a scientist who specializes in testing drugs on detainees in a remote and state-of-the-art penitentiary. He not only uses people as guinea pigs, but he applies drugs to them that are not harmless: they alter the moods of prisoners, generating unknown abilities and also extreme emotions that will soon generate disturbances.
Three characters will play a key role in this experiment: Jeff, played by Miles Teller (who we will soon see in The Offer, Paramount+ series); Verlaine (Mark Paguio, How to be Queer) and Lizzy (Jurnee Smollett, star of Lovecraft Country, HBO+ series). These three inmates will turn Steve Abnesti's experiment upside down.
Hemsworth's character is the trigger for this film: “He is the visionary genius behind the whole Spiderhead program,” Kosinski said at the press release organized by Netflix. He added: “He has noble intentions, but also some darker things, lurking beneath the surface.” On the characters of Jeff and Lizzy he commented: “She has a more mysterious past and is attracted to Jeff. They have a very close relationship, but while he shows his feelings openly, she hides her pain with a cheerful personality,” Kosinski analyzed.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director linked a personal experience, during a dental visit, with the creation of his character: “I was listening to something like (the Texan singer) Christopher Cross while I was getting a tooth pierced. I felt that it was interesting for Hemsworth's character to create this air of relaxation and fun in a place where something much more nefarious is being done.”
The Spider's Head will hit the platform on June 17, almost a month before the super premiere of the new film from the Marvel factory that also stars Hemsworth, Thor: Love and Thunder. This mega release is scheduled for July 8, 2022.
The release date of another Hemsworth film that is in post-production is also awaited. This is the second part of the Rescue Mission (Extraction) again directed by Sam Hargrave and produced by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo.
