Volodymir Zelensky criticized the head of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, for visiting Moscow before Kiev

“The war is in Ukraine, there are no bodies on the streets of Moscow. It would be logical to go to Ukraine first and see people, see the consequences of the occupation,” said the president, questioning the decision as “wrong” and “unjust”

Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky criticized on Saturday the decision “without any logic” of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to plan to go to Moscow next week rather than to Kiev.

“It is simply wrong to go first to Russia and then to Ukraine,” Zelensky said at a press conference, referring to Guterres' agenda, which plans to travel to Moscow on Tuesday and to Kiev on Thursday. “It's a decision without any justice or any logic,” he added.

“The war is in Ukraine, there are no bodies on the streets of Moscow. It would be logical to go to Ukraine first and see people, see the consequences of the occupation,” before visiting Russia, added the Ukrainian leader.

Since the UN Secretary-General claimed that Russia was violating the United Nations Charter by sending troops to Ukraine, the Russian president has refused to maintain any contact with him.

Guterres has not had much contact with the Ukrainian leader either. They only had a telephone conversation on February 26, two days after the start of the Russian offensive.

The journey of Guterres

In Ukraine, Guterres will not only see President Zelensky and his Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba; he will also meet with staff of UN agencies to discuss “how to optimize humanitarian assistance to the people of Ukraine.”

In the event of his visit to Moscow, the official will hold “a working meeting” with the head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, before being received by Putin.

Although it has not been described as a “mediation” mission, this is Guterres' first trip to the two countries involved in war since mid-February, when Russia launched its troops against eastern and northern Ukraine, triggering the largest refugee movement in Europe for several decades.

Just a week ago, Guterres proposed to Putin and Zelensky an “easter truce” on the occasion of the Orthodox Easter that began yesterday and will continue until Sunday, but received no response from Russia.

The UN as a whole has been called into question during the war in Ukraine because of its inability to stop the war or achieve even a truce or agreement for “humanitarian corridors”, mainly because of Russia's right of veto in the Security Council as one of its permanent members.
