17 December marks two years since little Sofia Cadavid, only 18 months old, was murdered by her own father, Diego Armando Cadavid, in the municipality of Rionegro, in Antioquia. In the last few hours, the conviction against the subject was confirmed.
This was ratified on April 22, when a judge ruled that the individual must remain 33 years and four months behind bars after killing the little girl on a farm in that municipality of Antioquia. Cadavid was convicted of aggravated homicide.
The macabre crime caused shock throughout the country at the end of 2020, as the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences determined that Sofia was not only beaten, but that her father drugged and suffocated her to the end of her life.
Local media say that the sentence against Diego Armando Cadavid was condemning, despite the fact that the murderer's defense sought to delay the process. Moreover, the infant's family denounces certain irregularities in the process, as compiled by the regional environment My East.
For his part, the lawyer of Sofia's mother assured that they will fight until the last consequences so that the penalty against the man contemplates more years than those ruled.
“I think that more progress should have been made, because although it is true that it was not proven that it was a femicide, it should also be seen that it was about a girl who was only 18 months old,” said Hugo Mejía, a defender of the victim's relatives, in testimonies shared by Blu Radio.
Diego Cadavid told his ex-wife, Luisa Fernanda Henao, that he was going to spend time with their daughter on December 17, 2020 and return her on the same day. At about 12 noon, the man went to pick up the girl with a calm appearance.
“He asked for a while to share with his daughter. He said he was taking the girl to her mother's house and that at 5 in the afternoon he would return her,” told the mother's brother to local media, who stressed that, immediately, the man removed the sim card from his cell phone and deleted all social networks.
After 5 in the afternoon, there was no trace of the man and he was last seen in his business, as he was engaged in being a merchant. Later, according to Sofia's uncle's version, the subject walked with the minor along a path along the La Mota river, between the El Llanito and El Porvenir neighborhoods in the municipality of Rionegro.
The mother of the minor, seeing that she was not answering her phone or returning, began the search. She denounced the facts and asked for help, but by then it was too late. Sofia was already dead.
In the early morning of December 18, the Mayor's Office of Rionegro, east of Medellín, announced that authorities had found the 18-month-old girl Sofía Cadavid dead, who was reported missing the previous afternoon.
Minutes before finding the minor, the Attorney General's Office reported that the father, Diego Armando Cadavid Álvarez, was captured in the capital of Antioquia by CTI Units, in a joint work with the Military Gaula and the National Police, as the alleged responsible for the heinous crime.
The man reported where the minor was, but assured that he did not remember anything about what happened and stated that he had been drugged. Cadavid was disoriented and had traces of blood on his shirt. However, the evidence of the investigation proved that it was a strategy to evade justice because he had already murdered her.
