On Thursday, April 21, police authorities in New York released more details about the murder of “the mother of Queens”, one of the cases that has attracted the attention of the community and the media in the United States. According to reports, David Bonola confessed to being the material perpetrator of the femicide of Orsolya Gaal after the victim refused to continue his extramarital relationship, so he will face three charges before the justice system.
The 44-year-old man was charged with the crimes of murder, criminal manipulation and criminal possession of a gun, after he accepted responsibility for the murder, transfer and abandonment of Gaal's body at the junction of Jackie Robinson Avenue and Metropolitan Avenue, in New York, early Saturday, April 16, 2022.
According to police reports, David Bonola was identified as a person of Mexican origin in an irregular migration situation who entered the United States approximately in 2002, although he did not have a criminal record. In recent years he has served as a “handyman”, that is, the one responsible for the maintenance of various services related to the home.
This employment would have led him to meet Orsolya Gaal, who had a marriage with 53-year-old Howard Klein, from whom they procreated two children. The couple would have offered Bonola a job in the house where the four members of the family lived.
According to the feminicide, since 2020 he entered into an intermittent relationship with the victim, who decided to end it in March. Some photographs published on Gaal's social networks even include compromising comments from a profile identified by the name of David Bonola.
On the weekend, when Klein and the eldest son of the couple left New York for Oregon to visit the university of the entity, Bonola went to Gaal's house in order to revive their relationship. She would have arrived home around midnight, after attending an event in the company of some of her friends.
According to the authorities, it is not clear whether Bonola, who knew the location of the spare key to enter the house, agreed against the will or with the consent of Orsolya Gaal. However, upon noticing his presence and thanks to the fact that her 13-year-old son was in the building, the 51-year-old woman decided to take him to the basement to talk, although he later asked him to leave.
Once in that room, they engaged in a heated discussion where one of them swung a knife. However, at some point Bonola took control of the stab and stabbed Gaal more than 50 times, according to police reports. The injuries resulted in the death of the woman before 1 am, although the minor present in the house did not notice the event.
Bonola tried to dispose of Orsolya's body using a hockey bag belonging to one of the sons. Several security cameras documented his departure dragging his canvas backpack along the sidewalks, from the Klein Gaal family home in Forest Hills, to the avenue that connects the neighborhoods of Queens and Manhattan. Once he left the body, the accused went through Forest Park to return to his home.
The next morning, a dog walker ran into the body and reported it to 911, who began the investigation and discovered a trace of blood that he was carrying to Orsolya Gaal's house, as well as a jacket and bloody rags, in the park through which he fled, which could have been used to the feminicide. Meanwhile, Bonola went to Bellevue Hospital for medical attention due to injuries on his hands.
Since then, officers began investigations with the clues they had found so far. One of the key findings that helped locate the person responsible was a note that the feminicide himself would have left on the family refrigerator, in which he recommended that they “look for a new handyman”. A NYPD supervisor confirmed the relevance of the errand to The Daily Beast.
The authorities did not find the person responsible until Wednesday, April 20. That day the cops spotted him in the Queens area and approached him for questioning. At police station 112 he confessed to his crime and during his statement “it was very practical, very concrete, answered all the questions they had,” the authorities reported.
According to New York City Police Department Lieutenant Tommy Thompson, the family knew Bonola. “We believe that Mr. Bonola's relationship with our victim was an intimate relationship and this turned out to be a domestic dispute they were having over their intimate relationship. They had been on and off before, but they had reunited in early April and their relationship was considered to be over,” he clarified.
“Two children are left without a mother and a young teenager faces the additional trauma of being there when this heinous murder occurred,” said Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz. The murder of Orsolya Gaal is not an isolated case. In fact, it is estimated that in 2019 about 1800 women were victims of femicide in the United States.
