Colombian footballer Andrés Ramiro Manga Escobar was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in Iceland for an allegation of sexual abuse against him while serving as a playing player for the Leiknir Reykjavík club in the capital of this European country.
Although residing in Reykjavik and not yet in intramural prison, the athlete from Puerto Tejada, Cauca, does not have a contract or is engaged in any economic activity that allows him to sustain himself in Iceland.
Although he tried to appeal the judicial determination for which he is accused, the lack of financial resources led him to seek help from the Colombian authorities for help in resolving his legal situation in the European country.
Although the Colombian striker said he is not imprisoned, he wants to return to his homeland to stop looking for places to stay, so from his social networks he has made all the noise possible to request the Colombian Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as such to bring him back home.
In that sense, since the night of Thursday, April 21, several Colombian players and even the national team have labeled the Foreign Ministry to ask for help for Manga Escobar.
Yerry Mina, Davinson Sanchez, Duvan Zapata, Jéison Murillo, Rafael Santos Borré, Harold Preciado, Frank Fabra, Gustavo Cuellar, Ronaldo Ariza, Daniela Montoya, Johan Arango, Déiber Caicedo, Luis Orejuela, Andrés Roa, among many other football personalities, joined the support on Instagram for the player cafe 30 year old man who is not at all wrong either in Iceland by replicating the following message:
To date, the situation of the former Cucuta Deportivo player, Deportes Tolima, Millonarios, Atlético Nacional and Deportivo Cali has not improved. The footballer maintains his innocence in the face of accusations against him that he had sex without consent with a woman in his home, taking advantage of the fact that she was in a state of drunkenness:
The Icelandic justice took Escobar's passport while the judicial process progresses and he cannot leave Icelandic territory for the time being.
In this regard, on March 31, the Association of Professional Football Players of Colombia (Acolfutpro) spoke on its Twitter account to inform that they met with Escobar and his lawyer in order to try to intercede and assert their rights in the European country.
According to the players' union and its leader, Carlos González Puche, Andrés has received an unfair and xenophobic conviction in the sexual harassment case in which he was reportedly involved last year. They reiterate that the Colombian has had his rights violated, so they also asked for the support of Colombian diplomats in Sweden.
With the hashtag #UnidosSomosMásFuertes, this is how Acolfutpro pronounced himself about it at that time, labeling footballers Adrián Ramos, Davinson Sánchez, David Macalister Silva and Daniel Cataño:
