Debanhi Escobar case: what the authorities have assured

In recent days, the state of Nuevo León has remained in the country's sights due to the disappearances of women, however, the case that has struck Mexicans is the disappearance of the young Debanhi Susana Escobar Bazaldúa, last seen on April 9 and found dead on the night of the 21st.

After 13 days of searching, on the night of last Thursday, 21, the Attorney General's Office of Nuevo León reported on the discovery of a body in a cistern near the site where the young law student was last seen, in the municipality of Escobedo.

Although there was no official confirmation at the time, Debanhi Susana's father, Mario Escobar, assured that she was his only daughter because the clothes match the one she wore before her disappearance.

Given this, what have the authorities said about the case?

On the night of Thursday, 21, the State Attorney General's Office reported through an official statement that a lifeless body was found inside an abandoned water cistern during the site of his disappearance.

According to the security authorities, the agents took action to recover the body with the support of the State Civil Protection, since due to the conditions of abandonment of the site, “the presence of water and depth present technical difficulties for field experts”.

In the text, the Prosecutor's Office of the entity stated that at that time it was not possible to establish general characteristics of the lifeless person, although, he added, they will be informed at the end of the work by criminalists.

Without yet having the identity of the body, the agency indicated in its statement that the victim's family had already been notified and attended to, pending the results of the investigation.

Meanwhile, on the morning of Friday, April 22, the Undersecretary of Public Security, Ricardo Mejía Berdeja, confirmed at the press conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) that the body located in the cistern had a crucifix and clothes matching the characteristics of Debanhi Susana Escobar.

“They inform us that the body has already been rescued from the cistern, that they took it to the forensic medical service, to perform the necropsy and to be able to genetically confirm whether it is the girl's body (...) They point out that there was a crucifix that matches the one she was wearing as well as the clothes that were released at the last moment,” she explained.

However, it was until Friday afternoon that the Attorney General's Office confirmed, through a message on social networks, that the body found in the tank of the Nueva Castilla Motel corresponds to that of the law student, Debanhi Escobar.

The attorney general of the entity, Gustavo Adolfo Guerrero, reported that after scientific evidence, it is allowed to make known that the body found in the area corresponds to that of the 18-year-old girl, the cause of her death being a deep contusion of the skull.

The prosecutor added that so far, the authorities have not ruled out any line of investigation, so all resources will be used to determine the facts. “And if these indicate a crime, they will be prosecuted with the full force of the law,” he said.

Regarding the case, Rodolfo Salinas de la Peña, head of the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Disappeared Persons, explained that the data they have, supported by videos and testimonies, indicate that Debanhi Escobar arrived at a party in a Quinta accompanied by two people.

At approximately 1:20 in the morning of April 9, the young woman boards a private transport alone because of an apparent difference with locals. The driver, said the official, stated that Debanhi got off the vehicle on the Villa Numancia highway and the road via Ladero around 4:25 hours.
