This week Mike Tyson made news again for an extra-sporting event after he fiercely hit a passenger who had bothered him on a plane that was about to take off from San Francisco to Florida. The images were published by the US portal TMZ, which this week published new information about the attacked man.
The subject in question is called Melvin Townsend III and he has an extensive criminal record. In his 36 years of life, he has already been convicted of fraud, theft, burglary, possession of prohibited substances (oxycodone) and trafficking in stolen goods. For all this he was arrested twice, on one he spent 20 months behind bars and on the other 15, the last one in 2020.
Although at first this man refused to file a complaint against the former world boxing champion, he did choose to consult with a lawyer. Matt Morgan of Morgan & Morgan is the one who represents Townsend and that's why he talked to the site TMZ: “Our client is a big fan of Mike Tyson. When Mike Tyson boarded the plane, he got too excited. At first, their interaction was cordial.”
From the environment of the former boxer they explained that this boy did not stop bothering the former athlete, who got fed up with the situation and assaulted him, after having repeatedly asked him to stop. “At a certain point, Mr. Tyson was clearly agitated by an overly excited fan and started beating him excessively. This situation could have been avoided by simply contacting the flight attendant,” said attorney Morgan. In addition, he denied that his client threw a bottle of water at Iron Mike, something they hold from the environment of the former champion.
So far, no charges have been filed, even though Townsend suffered minor injuries to his face, as can be seen in the video that was recorded with a cell phone from inside the cabin. According to reports, Tyson got off before the plane took off for Florida.
Morgan remarked that the attitude of the 55-year-old former athlete was not right: “To state the obvious, as one of the greatest boxers of all time, Mr. Tyson should have exercised greater restraint before using his hands on an overly excited fan.” For all this, it is not ruled out that in the next few hours, the attacked subject will initiate a lawsuit.
