
The state of Veracruz positioned itself as the fifth entity with the highest number of cases of femicide registered nationally. This is according to official data provided by the Secretary of the Navy, José Rafael Ojeda Durán, during the morning conference this Friday, April 22. The period included was from the beginning of the current administration of Cuitláhuac García as governor (December 2018 to March 2022).
In 2022 alone, the number of crimes classified as femicide had risen to 21 cases, with February being the deadliest month with nine (January and March with 6 each). In terms of intentional homicides, it ranks nine nationally with 4,138 (the average is 2975). Despite this, the president of Veracruz welcomed the strategy to combat insecurity, as well as the inter-institutional work that has led to “positive results”.
“Thanks to coordination with federal forces, we have had positive results on the issue of security and that has been one reason why we gain the confidence of private capital for investments. We will continue to work together. The results speak for themselves,” Garcia Jimenez said.
Of the other crimes considered to be of high impact, Veracruz ranks three in kidnappings, seven in extortion, ten in carrier robbery, eleven in business robbery, 12th in passerby robbery and 15th in transport robbery. The latter being the only one that maintains an upward trend.
Of the global crime incidence, the state recorded 23,149 of which 10,165, 44%, have been concentrated in only seven municipalities: Xalapa the most with 2,490, Veracruz follows with 2,403, Coatzacoalcos with 1,947, Córdoba with 1,165, Minatitlán with 762, Poza Rica de Hidalgo with 712 and Acayucan with 686.
Regarding the number of security elements in the entity, Rafael Ojeda reported that there are a total of 9,650 officers between state, municipal and naval police. However, he specified that those who are operational without 8 thousand 643.
With regard to the federal force with a presence in Veracruz, there are 8,274 elements of the Secretariat of the Navy, 7,334 from the Mexican Army and Air Force, and 4,727 from the National Guard, for a total of 20,335 among the three institutions.
As a result of the joint work, more than one ton of marijuana, 326.6 kilos of cocaine, 3.44 kilos of methamphetamine, 11.8 million pesos, one aircraft, 2,766 vehicles, 203 firearms, as well as 10,617 cartridges and 461 useful magazines have been seized. As probable perpetrators, a total of 1,469 people have been arrested.
