During the ceremony for the 25th anniversary of Operation Chavín de Huántar, several former ransom commandos demonstrated against the Pedro Castillo government. As a form of protest, a group of soldiers chose not to stand up in the presence of the president, while five of them were they withdrew from the place.
“He's not qualified. It's a puppet of Cerrón. Let Mr. Castillo listen well; we would give our lives again if necessary,” said Jaime Cabrera, a former soldier who participated in Operation Chavin de Huántar.
“We withdrew from the ceremony to express our indignation of these usurpers. We remember the memory of civilian men and women. The military must be remembered and they are trampling on their memory (...) (Pedro Castillo) has extremist ideas. Everything that happens like Cuajone, Las Bambas, is no accident,” he added.
In this regard, Defense Minister José Gavidia spoke out against the attitude of the military through his Twitter account. From there, he rejected the snub suffered by Castillo Terrones in the middle of the ceremony.
“I reject the attitude of some retired military personnel who attended the ceremony where honors were paid to the courageous commandos who lost their lives in the Chavín de Huántar military operation,” he said on social media.
Likewise, Gavidia considered that the reaction of this group of soldiers is “a lack of respect for our heroes” and asserted that during today's event “terrorism was emphatically repudiated”.
As we recall, today, Friday, April 22, marks the 25th anniversary of the operation 'Chavín de Huantar', which freed 72 people from a long kidnapping at the residence of the Japanese ambassador, an action in which the 14 members of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) were killed.
In that sense, the head of Defense highlighted the dedication, courage and professionalism of the Chavín de Huántar commandos. “In the Armed Forces we will always be willing to offer our lives for the country. To our commandos, our greatest recognition and that of all Peru,” he said during the ceremony.
“It is a clear demonstration that together we can do great things. An operation where it is demonstrated that the union between the commandos, the miners, the press, the united population achieved this operation that is an example in the world,” he added.
For his part, President Castillo, after the outbreak, called for unity between the Government and the Armed Forces. “Unity is strength and as a Government we are always ready for consensus. It's not just about government management, it's about the lives of just over 33 million Peruvians,” he said.
In turn, he highlighted the courage and courage of the members of the Armed Forces during the rescue operation at the Japanese Embassy in 1997, and added that Peru will never surrender before acts such as MRTA terrorism.
“They gave us the best example of unity to achieve goals in favor of the country. These objectives that we must use right now to achieve a great concentration on the entire national scene, in civil society, the judiciary, in the Congress of the Republic, and the executive branch itself,” he said.
Pedro Castillo said that the example of Chavín de Huántar's commands should be followed in order to achieve successful results in the country, considering the operation as “a milestone that will remain in the memory of all Peruvians and future generations.”
