On Friday, April 22, International Earth Day is celebrated, which for almost 50 years has been trying to raise awareness of the importance of the relationship and interdependence that human beings and other living beings have with the nature of the planet.
A good way to learn more about Earth's ecosystems, the most notable aspects of its geography and the different species that inhabit it, among other topics, is to watch series and movies that teach us while entertaining us. If you're a Netflix subscriber, this list is for you.
1. Andes mágicos
The first season of this series marks a route through the geographies that contains the largest mountain range in the world. From Argentina to Colombia, this stunning documentary tells the story of five people and their deep connection to the majestic South American mountain range. Created by Luis Ara, it has two seasons.
2. Una vida en nuestro planeta (A Life In Our Planet)
David Attenborough, a pioneer in the dissemination of documentaries about nature and the impact of humanity on it, discusses here several actions to save the planet. “The future of life on Earth depends on our ability to take action,” warns the British scientist in his powerful lessons on the urgency of combating the climate crisis.
3. Animal
This four-episode production uses the latest technology in filming to enter the worlds of eight species among the most majestic creatures on the planet. The series follows a central character — a mother lioness, a wild canine, a baby kangaroo or a giant octopus — and captures unprecedented moments, from the most endearing to the most striking.
4. En busca del coral (Chasing Coral)
This documentary by Jeff Orlowski brings together a group of biologists and coral enthusiasts on an ocean adventure to discover why the reefs are disappearing at an unprecedented rate. With advanced cameras they face their complicated task to document the tragic transformation that takes place beneath the waves. Premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, In Search of Choral combines powerful images with emotion and even suspense.
5. La tierra de noche (Night On Earth)
Seven episodes take us through nature in the dark in different parts of the world. Produced by Frances Casey, Bill Markham and Jonathan Mussman, the production tells what life is like in the animal kingdom when Homo sapiens sleeps. From Alaska to Chilean Patagonia, some species go hunting, others take refuge from threats, and others mate under the stars.
