The downward lane of Avenida Las Palmas, which allows mobility in the East-West direction, is now fully enabled and with vehicular passage on both roads. This was reported by the Mayor's Office of Medellín on the morning of this Friday, April 22.
After several months, the work carried out at a critical point of this road corridor, located at kilometer three, was completed, where last year there was a strong landslide of approximately 30 cubic meters of land that had caused the closure of the road.
According to the municipal administration, for the treatment of the 45-meter-high slope, it was necessary to install a system of 140 steel anchors. In addition, a concrete coating was carried out on the mountain in an area of 1,200 square meters.
The Secretary of Physical Infrastructure, Natalia Urrego Arias, explained that the works to enable the two carriageways of the descending lane of Avenida las Palmas took several months because they not only focused on opening the road corridor, but focused on finding definitive solutions to prevent situations such as the one that was recorded last year to be presented again in that sector of Medellin.
For the recovery of this point and to enable the passage again, an investment of about 3.2 billion pesos was made. With this work, the reconstruction of the existing platform in this sector was also carried out, with which the aim is to give priority to pedestrians, as explained by the competent authorities.
The Mayor's Office of Medellín highlighted that during the execution of this work that addressed the emergency on Avenida Las Palmas, at least 30 jobs were generated, which contributed to the economic recovery of the capital of Antioquia.
Glide on Las Palmas Avenue in Medellin
Heavy rains that occur at different times of the year generate different emergencies, including landslides. This has been the case in Medellín on several occasions when rain destabilizes the terrain and these situations arise.
It is worth remembering that last year there were several landslides on Avenida Las Palmas in the capital of Antioquia, some of them in March, May and August. After the last collapse in that sector, due to heavy rainfall in the area, the authorities began the recovery work mentioned above.
Despite the fact that in the emergency there were no injuries or fatalities, this situation did affect several citizens who were mobilizing through that sector of Medellín, since there were several months of closure of the descent lane.
