The president of the Ecuadorian National Court of Justice, Iván Saquicela, announced that he signed the extradition request for former President Rafael Correa, who is on the run from Ecuadorian justice because he was sentenced to eight years in prison for bribery in the Bribes case 2012-2016, because the Court determined that there was a bribery scheme aimed at financing Alianza PAIS, Correa's late party.

Saquicela reported in a televised interview that he will ask the Foreign Ministry to notify Belgium of the request. This is not the first time that the Ecuadorian justice system has tried to get Correa back and pay his sentence. So far Ecuador has requested three Interpol broadcast alerts to capture him, but these have been denied. However, in May 2021, a court of judges in the country stated that for extradition the Interpol alert is not necessary, since Correa is known to live in Belgium.
