Russia aspires to fully control southern Ukraine and the Donbas region (east), in order to have a land bridge to Crimea, which was annexed in 2014, but it also aspires to reach Transnistria, the separatist region of Moldova.

Since the start of the second phase of the special operation, which began two days ago, one of the objectives of the Russian army is to establish full control over the Donbas and southern Ukraine,” said Rustam Minnekayev, deputy commander of the forces of the military district of central Russia.

The military explained that this will ensure a land corridor to Crimea and influence key infrastructures of the Ukrainian economy, such as the Black Sea ports through which agricultural and metallurgical products are shipped, he said, quoted by Russian agencies, in a meeting with companies in a military-industrial complex in Yekaterinburg.

According to Minnekayev, control of southern Ukraine will also help the pro-Russian separatists in Transnistria, who have been in control of a territory of Moldova bordering western Ukraine since 1992.

Control of southern Ukraine is also a corridor to Transnistria, where we also see cases of oppression of the Russian-speaking population,” the general said.

Moldova is a small Romanian-speaking country that was part of the former Soviet Union and is now led by a pro-Western government.

For his part, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, regretted late this Thursday that Russia has rejected the United Nations proposal to establish a truce during Orthodox Easter, which is celebrated next April 24.

This shows very well how the leaders of this state really treat the Christian faith, one of the most joyful and important holidays,” Zelensky said in his usual evening speech, as recorded in a presidential statement.

Russia rejected UN Secretary-General António Guterres's proposal to declare a four-day humanitarian ceasefire during Orthodox Easter to remove civilians from Mariupol and bring humanitarian aid to war-torn areas.

On the other hand, Zelensky reiterated during his speech his thanks to the partners for providing aid to Ukraine and assured that the port city of Mariupol resists the invasion of Russian troops.

I thank my partners for their help and urge them to accelerate the supply of the necessary weapons to Ukraine so that we can achieve peace,” Zelensky emphasized. He also emphasized that Mariupol is a city that continues to resist Russia. “Despite everything the invaders say about it,” he said.

The president of Ukraine accused Russia of planning to falsify an independence referendum in the partially occupied southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.
