These are the supermarkets where people buy the most in Mexico

One of the favorite supermarkets of Mexicans has the highest price of the basic basket, according to data from Profeco

The Ministry of Finance and Public Credit together with the Tax Administration Service (SAT) announced that from January to March 2022 the total income of the main stores in self-service in the country was almost 379 billion pesos, with Walmart being the supermarket where Mexicans buy the most and Casa Ley the least preferred.

The Revenue Report for Top Self-Service Stores shows data from January to March 2022 and took into account the following stores: Walmart, Oxxo , Soriana, Chedraui, Costco, Herb, Casa Ley and others that were grouped together as Zorro Wholesale Supermarket, Al Super, S-Mart, Neto Stores, Calimax, Merza, Dunosusa and Pitico.

According to the results, the total revenue of the main self-service stores this year increased by 4.2 percent compared to the same period last year, in total there was a difference of 36 billion 300 thousand pesos.

From March 1 to 31, 2022 alone, there was an income of almost 132 billion pesos, that is 23 billion 500 thousand pesos more than in the same period of the previous year.

Walmart is an American multinational that began operations in Mexico in 1991 after partnering with the commercial group Cifra, that same year the first Sam's Club emerged. Today it is made up of the companies Bodega Aurrera, Superama, Sam's Club and Vips.

During the first quarter of 2021 Walmart had an income of 149 billion 820 thousand pesos, while for the same period of this year it had 165 billion 108 thousand pesos, a variation of 15 billion 288 thousand pesos.

On the other hand, the second favorite self-service store of Mexicans is Oxxo, at the end of the 70s stores began to open in the city of Monterrey, by 1979 they already had operations in Chihuahua, Hermosillo and Mexicali. The owner is Eugenio Garza Lagüera, originally from Monterrey Nuevo León, grandson of the founder of companies such as Cerveceria Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma.

For the first three months of last year, Oxxo had 44 billion 475 thousand pesos, in the same period in 2022 it had 47 billion 485 thousand pesos, a variation of 0.4 percent.

The self-service store Sorianai/i had an income in the months of January to March in 2021 of 35 billion 903 thousand pesos, while for the same quarter but this year it recorded 37 billion 739 thousand pesos.

A few days ago, the Federal Consumer Prosecutor's Office (Profeco) announced that in the self-service stores Walmart and Soriana they sold the products of the basic basket at excessive prices, being the highest in the country since they are much higher than other establishments.

In the Mexican capital, household essentials can reach a price of 1,82 pesos at Walmart and Soriana. The authorities emphasized the rise in prices due to inflation, since in a few weeks it increased by approximately 30 percent. They also said that more increases are expected in the basic basket, so they suggest that the population look for offers or economic places.
