On Tuesday, April 19, Colombian Luis Diaz scored and assisted in the Premier Classic between Liverpool and Manchester United. The squad led by German Jürgen Klopp won the victory after leaving the score at 4-0. Once again, Diaz is full of praise after his great performance this duel. In fact, they compared it to Uruguayan footballer Luis Suarez, who also wore the red shirt.
After this duel, the English newspaper 'Liverpool Echo' published an article explaining that Liverpool was able to sign “their new Luis Suarez” referring to Luis Díaz. This is because the player charrua arrived in mid-2011, a season in which he scored 4 goals with 3 assists in all competitions; a figure that the Colombian is about to break.
“Diaz was most notably involved in the sublime team play that led Sadio Mané to score all three goals for the Reds (against Manchester). After receiving a fantastic long pass characteristic from Trent Alexander-Arnold, the former Porto player took the ball into the area and helped create a shooting opportunity for Andy Robertson. When that shot was blocked, Díaz regained possession and from there the sequence that led to the goal was unfolded”, can be read in the note.
In addition, they wrote that: “There were two other main ways in which he helped his team against City, and these are areas where they have traditionally not been as powerful as they should have been: bargaining opponents and winning free kicks. Between the 23rd minute and the break, Liverpool completed four dribbles and each of them went to Diaz. He took the ball past Joao Cancelo, Fernandinho, Gabriel Jesus and Bernardo Silva, an impressive quartet of players to beat.”
They added: “What makes this more remarkable is that there have been only 11 instances where a member of Klopp's team completed four or more dribbles in a league or European match this season (according to FBref), let alone in a quarter of a match against that elite.”
Now, on the comparison between Luis Díaz and Luis Suárez, the English media outlet highlighted that the Colombian is fighting to break Suarez's numbers in Liverpool. “No one will forget Suarez's performance in the 3-1 victory over Manchester United that season, particularly when he beat three opponents to prepare Dirk Kuyt for the first goal of what became a hat-trick. It may have taken another season for the Uruguayan to become a scoring phenomenon, but Diaz's Liverpool career has started in a very similar style, so the sky could be the limit in the coming years. And whatever happens in terms of goals, it will continue to give the Reds attributes they previously lacked.”
