It is a Thursday of good news for Carlos Sainz since on the same day that his renewal with Ferrari was announced until 2024, it also transpired that he will debut engine this weekend on the fourth date of Formula 1, which will be held with the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola, Italy. The Spaniard will have greater potential to fight ahead as Maranello's team is the reference so far this season.
Sainz had a difficult weekend in Australia, where he dropped out for the first time as a Scuderia runner and ended with a 17-race streak in which he scored points straight. The 27-year-old spun and was left out in the second round of the competition held on the Albert Park street circuit in Melbourne. Once their F1-75 arrived in the pits, the red team carried out an arduous analysis of the car, in which a problem was detected in the engine and out of caution the Scuderia technicians understood that it was best to replace it for this weekend, according to the Italian website Formu1a.Uno.
Ferrari's initial plans were to put the second power unit of the season in Miami (8/05) or Spain (22/05), and it added the chance to provide an additional ten horsepower after making a few minor adjustments to reliability. However, in the case of the Spaniard they had to advance the change and the son of the Matador will have a reinforced combustion engine and fresher overall compared to his greatest rivals.
The so-called “Ice” in the jargon, because it is a cooler engine, will be able to guarantee a plus of power. The PU2 will be mounted immediately because, as it is a weekend in which the Sprint Saturday race will take place, the cars will enter the closed park after the first hour of free practice and in that sector no one can touch them.
While Sainz's first “iron”, it can still be recovered and therefore reused on Friday of the date in Miami or in the following ones.
This panorama only provides satisfaction to the madridista in the face of what is coming at the historic Dino and Enzo Ferrari Autódromo. “You can't imagine how much I laughed when I read the rumors about the problems that were going to arise in my renovation, when I knew everything was done and we were just waiting for Imola to announce it,” said Sainz, who was happy and relaxed after the news went public.
It should be remembered that since 2014 F1 cars have a hybrid engine, with a combustion drive and an electric one. At the start of this championship Ferrari's power unit, 066/7, proved to be the most competitive and Charles Leclerc's two victories over three races prove this.
After the positive weekend in Melbourne, where Maranello's team dominated with Leclerc, Ferrari was able to complete the usual routine checks on both F1-75s, including the two engines. In these analyses, the engine failure of Sainz's car was detected, which had been assembled since the first weekend of the season in Bahrain, and which so far had no major problems except, before the start of Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, related to the electrical part and which was fixed.
Leclerc dominates the championship with 71 points and takes 34 to George Russell (Mercedes) and 38 to Sainz. Fourth is Sergio Perez (30), from Red Bull and fifth Lewis Hamilton (28), with Mercedes. While this weekend world champion Max Verstappen (25) will seek revenge after his defection in Australia, although he was already found the fault he had in his Red Bull.
