The world and the best-known streaming services in the West are increasingly surrendering to the success of K-Pop and productions coming from South Korea. The latest fashion is the doramas or k-dramas, drama series produced in Asian countries that portray characteristic aspects of those places. And in this regard, the most recent production that has been successful is the drama Snowdrop, which premiered a few weeks ago on Star+.

The series portrays a forbidden romance during one of the country's most troubled years and stars singer Kim Ji-soo and Under the Rain actor Jung Hae-in. In her first acting role, Ji-soo plays Eun Yeong-ro, a woman who is willing to go against her family, and even her country, to help the man she is in love with.

It is set in 1987, during South Korea's turbulent transition from dictatorship to democracy. After World War II and the Korean War, a military dictatorship took power in South Korea under the pretext of an anti-communist plan and economic development.

In this context, we meet Eun Yeong-ro (Ji-soo), a South Korean university student who meets a man who has entered his university dormitory with bleeding wounds. Against all recommendations and risking his position as a student, Yeong-ro decides to help the man and hide him from those who persecute him. What she doesn't know at the time is that she's helping someone she shouldn't, a North Korean spy. The couple, whose affection for each other only grows, will have to put everything at risk to stay safe.

The story resembles a kind of Romeo and Juliet, but instead of a family dispute, what separates the two passionate lovers is a conflict between two countries. The series is not just a story of romance, it is a story that explores a pivotal moment in Korean history when conflict and violence abounded.

Snowdrop was directed by Jo Hyun-tak and written by Yoo Hyun-mi, who previously worked together on the 2018 thriller Sky Castle. Alongside Jung Hae-in and Ji-soo, supporting cast members include Jang Seung-jo, Yoon Se-ah, Kim Hye-yoon and Jung Yoo-jin.
