Through a press release, on the afternoon of Monday, April 18, the Colombian Football Federation (FCF) announced that Reinaldo Rueda left the technical direction of the Colombian national team. This decision was made after the 'tricolor' did not qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The departure of Reinaldo Rueda sparked social networks, as different sectors of the country have commented on the work of the vallecaucano coach and the performance of coffee growers in the qualifying phase for the World Cup. Since the fans of the coffee squad have asked the federation to bring coaches of the highest level, in fact, it has been asked that it be a woman who comes to command it.
Brigitte Baptiste, rector of EAN University, sparked a great debate on social media after giving her opinion on who should reach the leadership of the national squad. “It's time to think about a woman to lead the men's soccer team in Colombia,” Baptiste wrote through his official Twitter account.
Now, this Wednesday, the president of the federation spoke again about the controversy that there is about who will manage the coffee growers. On this occasion, the interview was for Primer Toque of Win Sports. In this space Jesurún gave new details about the coach's search and responded to some more controversial points that were left yesterday in his statements in some media.
On what terms they were left with Rueda, Jesurún confessed that: “Reinaldo Rueda has a humble personality. The last meeting had an emotional character. He was the one who told us it was time to step aside. He left with an immense height and it hurts us because he left a great person and technician.”
In addition, he clarified that the directors and other members of the federation are not only responsible for the selection of older people. “I don't think they should take my words out of context. They were a little harsh, but it's the truth. People should not ask us to resign, but those who rule. When I talk about football owners, I'm not lying. If something bothered them, I make excuses. But they say things to you in a wild way. They don't understand that you don't just do things for the senior selection. The managers have seen that a structural and serious task has been done and that is why they chose us to continue. There are sectors that attack you and you have to react.”
In the same way, he assured that the institution's staff and the players are the ones who suffer the most in the qualifying phase for the World Cup in Qatar. “People have to understand that there can't be someone more sore or have more use than us managers, the coaching staff and the players. The pain still persists. When the World Cup arrives it will be nostalgia. Football is a game and is subject to this type of outcome. Every effort was made and here there was nothing to reproach in terms of logistics. We were in the hands of an excellent technician, expert in selections. There was and will not be any doubt about Reinaldo Rueda. What we can't do is lock ourselves in so that pain consumes us and we don't build that of the future.”
Regarding the requests of the fans and other sectors of the country about who should lead the national team, Jesurún clarified that: “Today everyone is talking very happily about technicians. We have to be realistic because we are Colombia. Today, Klopp is the best coach in the world, but what band does he have. People have to land on technicians who are too top, but that's not why they guarantee us what we want. It is important that you know the idiosyncrasy, the cultural part of the Colombian footballer. That is part of the skill of a technician who comes.”
Finally, he assured that there were never any problems between the players. “There were never any problems in a locker room between players. It's ridiculous about the horns between players. It is not ruled out that there were differences due to the tactical approach of a match. After the rout against Ecuador there was tension, but there was no fight.”
