Despite the fact that there are still a little less than two and a half years left in the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), the race and the “uncovers” for the presidency of 2024 have already begun to come to light.
Under this tenor, the president re-launched names of potential candidates who could compete against those repeatedly mentioned (but not officially confirmed) of his party Claudia Sheinbaum, head of government of CDMX, and the chancellor, Marcelo Ebrard.
This, after on his morning of April 21 he ensured “zero simulation” within his government, which, he asserted, would allow any opponent (both in the political sphere and outside it) to be a candidate for the desired presidency.
In this way, and with a mockery tone, Andrés Manuel mentioned Margarita Zavala, deputy for National Action (PAN) and former first lady, Gabriel Quadri, deputy and his former rival in the 2012 presidential elections, and Rubén Moreira, coordinator of the Institutional Revolutionary (PRI) in the Chamber of Deputies.
He also evoked the influencer, Chumel Torres, and the journalist, Carlos Loret de Mola: both fervent critics of Tabasqueño and his administration, but the latter being the one who has sustained the most friction with López Obrador.
“Loret de Mola... Chumel, with all due respect, Chumel... don't be angry,” she said with a smile on her face as some and some of the conference attendees laughed over the clapping.
This is not the first time that the Chief Executive mentions (or mocks) personalities outside the political circle who would serve as potential representatives of the opposition for his relay in 2024.
In August 2021, López Obrador evoked the name of the journalist, Joaquín López-Dóriga; “that of Coparmex”, Gustavo de Hoyos, and, even, the “owner of Oxxo” and founder of the National Anti AMLO (FRENAAA), Gilberto Lozano.
Although on that occasion he did so with the intention of discrediting them, because, he mentioned, they “would not be better” than Ricardo Anaya - also “uncovered” for to contend for the position he lost to AMLO in 2018.
It is worth mentioning that, even though López Obrador seems to “forget” his name when touching these issues, Ricardo Monreal, leader of Morena's senators, is also one of the favorites strong to contend for the cherry bench.
This is due to the fact that the also member of the Political Conciliation Board (Jucopo) “unveiled” on August 31, 2021 by pointing out as “a serious man; politician trained in the street” and capable of “convincing many people inside Morena”.
Even with all the mentions and rumors, Andrés Manuel has reiterated that the candidate for the “progressive, liberal” flank will be democratically chosen, even though his political party has enough “options” to relieve him. However, a large part of the names mentioned have ruled out his interest in the presidential chair, such as Olga Sánchez Cordero or Tatyana Clouthier.
