The Historical Pact issued an official statement on Wednesday in which it announced that the Ethics and Guarantees Commission will open an investigation against the senator-elect, Piedad Córdoba, as a result of the allegations she has received about alleged funding from private individuals in her campaign to the Congress of the Republic.

The news comes after the presidential candidate, Gustavo Petro, asked the senator, through his Twitter account, to suspend her activities within the political coalition “until she can resolve, hopefully, favorably, the legal syndications made against her.”

“The parties that are members of the Historical Pact coalition report that the ethics and guarantees commission, composed of a delegate from each organization, will assume, within the framework of respect for due process and ongoing legal investigations, the evaluation of Dr. Piedad Córdoba's case,” the statement said.

In addition, the bench reaffirmed Petro's position and indicated that “in relation to the commitments made in the Coalition Agreement that fall within its competence, the senator will not participate in the activities of the Petro Presidente campaign.”

“The commission has received the request and acceptance of this procedure by Dr. Piedad Córdoba,” said the Historical Pact, which also stated that it will examine other cases similar to those that may occur.

On Wednesday, Córdoba issued a statement on his behalf from Medellín in which he expressed his agreement to stay out of Petro's campaign while resolving his legal situation: “Nothing could be further from my interest than being used as an excuse by the enemies of democracy to tarnish our imminent victory electoral”.

He also confirmed his willingness to be investigated by the Ethics Committee of the Historical Covenant, a position he had held last March: “I am sure [that] my innocence and my political persecution character will be recognized again, as in all previous episodes documented before the relevant authorities.”

In the past few days, the senator-elect had spoken again on the issue, and stated, through her Twitter account, that the accusations are part of a “encampment” against her: “On news rumors that seek to involve me in this new encampment, I reiterate that I have not received funding from prisoners of liberty for my election campaign. I demand that the Prosecutor respond to the right of petition about investigations and prosecutions against me.”

The stir over the announcement of the presidential candidate of the Historical Pact grew after 'Fico' Gutiérrez, a contender for the Colombian Team, questioned him through his social networks and asked him to tell the Colombian people “the truth”.

Petro: is Piedad also going to turn out to be an entrapment? What will this gentleman know, if he is asking her to withdraw from the campaign? This “ethical” act that is actually cynical is not enough. Tell Colombians the truth, Gustavo,” he said on Twitter this Wednesday morning.

Likewise, before attending the cultural debate at the Bogotá International Book Fair, Gutiérrez said that “a very which is taking place and which adds to the intention of the other campaign in which they seek benefits for the corrupt and the violent in exchange for votes”. And he pointed out that Piedad Córdoba had visited three extraditable prisoners in the La Picota prison to offer the above.

According to 'Fico', who is Petro's persecutor in the polls, the senator-elect would have visited drug trafficker Francisco Javier Zuluaga Lindo, alias 'Gordo Lindo', and José Leonardo Muñoz Martínez, alias' Douglas', former member of 'La Oficina'.
