Promoted as “the most explosive of the year,” host Piers Morgan's interview with former US President Donald Trump is already generating controversy before its premiere, with a trailer that generated accusations of a misleading edition about the behavior of the Republican leader.

The 30-second video summed up a tense crossover of Joe Biden's predecessor, who seems to be obfuscated when the interviewer reminds him that the 2020 election was free and fair. “You lost,” he stressed. Trump replied, “Only a fool would think that.” So, Morgan then asks Trump if he thinks he's a fool, and he replies, “I do now.”

Trump, often accused of lying in his statements, claims that he is a frank person and turns the dart on his interviewer again. “I think I'm a very honest man, much more honest than you, in fact. I don't think you're genuine.”

The trailer ends with Trump getting up from his seat and asking for the cameras to be turned off, implying that he stopped before the agreed time.

However, Trump was upset and gave his side of the story: it is a misleading edition.

The former president's team said the final comments were made when the dialogue was over and they exchanged greetings, but that it was edited to achieve dramatic effect.

This is a pathetic attempt to use President Trump as a way to revive the career of a failed television host,” said Taylor Budowich, a spokesman for the Republican leader, who would seek to be a candidate in 2024.

The 75-minute program will be broadcast this Monday on the grand premiere of the British channel TalkTV, by tycoon Rupert Murdoch. The tabloid newspapers The Sun and New York Post, also owned by Murdoch, published news on Thursday's front page stating that Trump abandoned the interview, in a global marketing campaign for Morgan's new channel and new program, Piers Morgan Uncensored.

The journalist, who was fired years ago as editor of the Daily Mirror for publishing fake photos, referred to the controversy: He says it's a rigged election, and now he says I have a rigged trailer. What I would say is that they watch the interview. Everything will be there. We won't make any misleading edits.”

And he insisted that there is nothing false about the teaser: “The promo reflects exactly what happened. Donald Trump was very angry about one thing in particular and couldn't let it go. But when people see the interview they will see that we have pleasant exchanges. We've always done it before. But that anger I felt about what was said to him before we started the interview is latent.”

Last year, the host left ITV's Good Morning Britain program after refusing to apologize for the comments he made about Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, a regular target of his criticism.

Faced with the controversy with Trump, he seemed happy. “I told my team, the only way to make this get bigger is if I wake up in the morning with a personal statement from Donald Trump. At 5 in the morning my phone rang, and there it was!” , gloated on ITV.
