Various social, environmental, cultural and trade union organizations in conjunction with the Colombia Free Fracking Alliance have called for April 22, International Earth Day, mobilization and protest actions in several cities and municipalities of the country, against the pilot fracking projects that have been promoted by the national Government in the department of Santander.

The promoters of these actions affirm that the mobilizations are in rejection of the approval by ANLA for the start of the Kalé project, and the process for the approval of the Platero project by the companies Ecopetrol and Exxon Mobil, both in the Santander department.

The complainants assert that these two facts “have occurred amid questioning due to lack of scientific rigor and conflicts of interest. The accelerated procedure to approve them, the lack of citizen participation, the lack of access to information and the constant threats against environmental leaders who oppose this practice in Puerto Wilches and Magdalena Medio”, are the points highlighted by the alliance to oppose this technique extractive of natural resources. .

For environmental defenders, the exploitation of these types of deposits involves enormous socio-environmental risks, both locally and globally, in a historical context in which the world is moving away from fossil energies. According to the Environmental Impact Study, a first impact that must be taken into account is related to the excessive use of water in this type of exploitation.

“We will take to the streets this Friday in a peaceful, joyful and festive way to commemorate Earth Day and reject the deceptions of Iván Duque, who travels the world talking about climate change but here in Colombia he imposes extractive megaprojects that put water, biodiversity, the planet and life at risk,” said the organizers of the activities.

In the call for mobilization, the alliance indicates that presidential candidates Federico Gutiérrez, Jhon Milton Rodríguez and Enrique Gómez “have openly expressed their support for fracking projects.”

For this reason, they request “to understand the dimension of the climate and ecological crisis that the planet is going through, to demonstrate their real commitment to present and future generations and to put the ban on fracking first in their campaign proposals and government plans if they are elected,” emphasizes the statement.
