The fire reported on the afternoon of April 20 in Tejupilco, State of Mexico and that has affected just over 150 hectares of grassland was controlled by 70%, as announced by Grupo Relámpagos at 14:00 hours on its Twitter account.

It should be noted that minutes earlier the National Forestry Commission (Conafor) on April 21 indicated that the flames had been controlled by 50%.

According to the Civil Protection team of the State of Mexico, to control the fire, more than 60 fire fighters from the Forest Protector of the State of Mexico (Probosque), the National Forestry Commission (Conafor), citizens and ejido organizations participated.

Likewise, the State Civil Protection Commission reported that, at the moment, there are no reports of injured or deceased persons, nor are they affected homes. The joint efforts managed to control part of the fire between Almoloya de Las Granadas and Tenería, in Tejupilco.

It should be added that since yesterday afternoon the accident was reported and eight brigades and a helicopter from the Air Rescue Group “Lightning” were added to liquidate it.

Given the conditions of the accident, until the early hours of this Thursday the elements continued to work on earth organized in polygons, with techniques such as backfire, depending on wind conditions; likewise, control gaps were opened to cut off the continuity of the combustible material.

It should be noted that, according to Probosque, at the cut of 9:00 p.m. on April 20, four forest fires were liquidated in the municipalities of Valle de Bravo, Acambay, Luvianos and Villa del Carbón in the State of Mexico.

At the moment, the causes of this incident are unknown and the liquidation of the incident is expected to account for the damage.

In addition to the forest fire in Tejupilco, two more are active and in combat in the Edoméx in: Predio Atesquelites, in the municipality of Valle de Bravo; and in Rancho Los Pinares, in Donato Guerra.

A large number of wildfires have been reported in recent months. In fact, on this day alone (21 April), Conafor recorded 59 active fires, of which there is a preliminary figure of 27,486 hectares affected from 16 different states.

The high temperatures that occur in the country, where some regions reach up to 45 degrees Celsius and a drastic decrease in the level of rainfall in recent months in the country favor the emergence of these ecological disasters, of which 99% of the occasions are considered to be caused by human activity.

Fires can be classified into three different types: cup or aerial, underground and superficial. Although such phenomena can occur at any time, there are two seasons of greatest incidence in the country, according to Conafor:

The first period runs from January to June. In this case, the areas with the greatest impact are located in the central, northern, northwest, south and southwest areas of the country. The second season runs from May to September and is recorded in the northwest of the country.

It should be added that according to the United Nations (UN) in 2050 there will be 30% more forest fires on the planet.
