Criticism continues against presidential candidate Gustavo Petro for the departure of the elected senator, attached to the Historical Pact, Piedad Córdoba. This time, on behalf of the communicator Ángela Patricia Janiot, who expressed through her Twitter account her annoyance at Petro's delay in reacting to the allegations against Cordoba since February 2020.

Janiot wrote the following message along with the candidate's tweet announcing the senator's departure from her presidential campaign:

The journalist took the opportunity to comment on another scandal, related to the visits of her brother, Juan Fernando Petro, to the southern pavilion of La Picota, in Bogotá, where important figures of Colombian politics linked to corruption scandals are being held.

The candidate did not respond to the remarks of Janiot, a prominent Colombian journalist who presents the evening edition of Noticiero Univisión, the highest rated news newspaper among the Hispanic population in the United States.

On the other hand, the elected senator accepted her departure from Gustavo Petro's presidential campaign, after Gustavo Petro informed the public of her intention for the first election day, scheduled for May 29.

The candidate wrote the following message: “I ask Piedad Córdoba to suspend all its activities within the campaign, until it can resolve, hopefully, favorably, the legal syndications made to it”, the impact of which Janiot's criticism spurred on social networks.

Apparently, the decision was not consulted with the senator-elect before Petro made the announcement, according to RCN Radio. For this reason, the candidate declared herself surprised, despite the fact that the head of debate of the Historical Pact, Alfonso Prada, had told the media that this Wednesday they would refer to the letter and the role of Córdoba in the campaign, with the results already known.

However, the political committee of the Historical Pact shared a statement on the case. Firstly, he pointed out that the ethics and guarantees committee of this community will assume the internal investigation into the problems of Piedad Córdoba, “within the framework of respect for due process and ongoing legal investigations.” The senator-elect had already accepted this investigation, which was announced while she was still campaigning.

Petro's decision, although it was taken by surprise, would not have prevented Córdoba from taking the decision to withdraw from the campaign. According to a statement sent by the political committee: “the commission has received the request and acceptance of this procedure by Dr. Piedad Córdoba”. The document closes by saying that it “reaffirms and demonstrates a commitment to transparency and probity of its leaders, and will examine any other cases that arise”.

Among the various controversies opened by the current senator, one that gained prominence in recent weeks are her alleged links with Alex Saab, one of the noted fronts of the Nicolás Maduro regime. For these alleged crimes, the Supreme Court of Justice investigates her.

A 125-page text, which was delivered by two Ecuadorian deputies to the Attorney General's Office, the Colombian Congress and Iván Duque's office, would reveal suspicious movements and private flights of politicians who met with Saab, including Piedad Córdoba, today outside the Historical Pact.
