The Cannes Film Festival is just under a month away, and the titles of some of the films that won a space in that prestigious space are already known. 'Un man', a feature film directed by Colombian director Fabián Hernández, is part of the selection of the 23 films that will be part of the Directors' Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival, announced in France.

“To be selected in the Directors' Fortnight, which has now completed 54 editions, is the recognition of an honest work with a lot of heart, which we have been developing for more than four years. It is a great opportunity for the film to start a journey in international festivals all over the top”, highlighted the filmmaker in testimonies rescued by the newspaper El Espectador.

'A man', according to the synopsis provided by the work team behind the film, tells the story of Carlos, a young resident of downtown Bogotá who must take on the challenges of living in a popular area and face the stereotypes that fall against him for that very reason. His participation in Cannes signifies his world premiere. The story was created based on the personal experiences that the director of the film lived.

“'A man' is the story of Carlos, a young man who lives in downtown Bogotá and who has to face the complex circumstances of the street, in his neighborhood,” Hernández specified in a talk with Noticias Caracol. “It is a very important recognition for Fabian and for the talented team that participated in the making of the film. It is a great pleasure for me to give back in this way the support of the national and international institutions that believed in the project”, was added from the team behind 'One Man'.

With the institutions that supported the feature film, he refers to the Bogotá District Institute for Children and Youth IDIPRON, the National University of Colombia, the District Institute of the Arts Idartes, the Gilberto Alzate Foundation Avendaño FUGA, Proimágenes Colombia and the Ministry of Culture.

It is an honour for the filmmaker, as he said, to be in that space where, over the years, several of his idols have been. The film's producer, Manuel Ruiz Montealegre, stressed, before El Espectador, that “from Fabián's eyes and feelings, the audience will discover an intense and complex city, perceived with great sensitivity and passion. It is a unique human and urban universe. We hope that 'A man' will be a contribution to the construction of a new Bogotá cinema”.

The film was shot in traditional neighborhoods in downtown Bogotá such as San Bernardo, Santa Fe, El Voto Nacional, La Estanzuela and Las Cruces; and it stars Felipe Ramírez, who, with this film, ventures into the world of acting. It is also the first role of many of the actors and the first film made by that director. The film resulted thanks to a stimulus in the production of feature films granted by the Film Development Fund. In addition to Montealegre, it was produced by Medio de Contención Producciones, in co-production with RTVCPlay, RTVC's free content platform. It is a co-production between Colombia, France, Holland and Germany.

The film has to its name important international industry awards such as participation in L'atelier de la Cinefondation at the Cannes Film Festival (2020) and the production awards of the FDC Proimágenes Colombia (2018), World Cinema Fund WCF (2020), Torino Film Lab TFL (2019) and in post-production the CNC de France (2021).
