The Norwegian government announced on Wednesday the sending of a hundred more anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine, as part of the military aid in the war against Russia.
The Norwegian authorities had previously authorized several donations of weapons to Ukrainian forces, amounting to a total of 4,000 anti-aircraft batteries and other military equipment.
“The conflict in Ukraine can be long-lasting and the country depends on international support against Russian aggression. That is why the government has decided to donate anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine,” Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram said in a statement.
These are Mistral missiles that until now have been carried on Norwegian navy ships, the Ministry of Defense added.
The Mistral is a very short-range surface-to-air missile manufactured since the late 1980s by the Matra defense group.
Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky had asked the Oslo authorities in March, during a videoconference speech to the Norwegian Parliament, for anti-aircraft missiles, but of a more modern type, NASAMS, manufactured by the Norwegian company Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace.
These are weapons that the Norwegian authorities had already decided to replace, hence the donation will not have “major consequences for national operational capacity,” Gram explained.
“The missiles were to be eliminated by the Norwegian Defense, but they are still modern and effective weapons that will be of great use to Ukraine. Other countries have donated similar weapons systems”, the document states.
Defense reported that the weapons have already been sent to Ukraine.
