British Intelligence released a new report on the situation in eastern Ukraine on Tuesday, stating that “Russia's inability to end the resistance in Mariupol and its indiscriminate attacks, which have harmed the resident civilian population, indicate that it is still failing to achieve its objectives as quickly as I wish”.
“Russian bombardments and attacks on the Donbas line of control continue to increase, and Ukrainians have repelled numerous attempts to advance Russian forces,” said a report by the UK Ministry of Defense posted on social media.
He warned: “Russia's ability to move forward continues to be affected by the environmental, logistical and technical problems that have plagued them so far, combined with the resilience of the highly motivated Ukrainian armed forces.”
Russia carried out dozens of bombings on Tuesday in eastern Ukraine, in a “new phase” of an invasion that has left thousands dead and that earned President Vladimir Putin the threat of new Western sanctions.
Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu assured that his troops were implementing a “liberation plan” of the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, the pro-Russian separatist territories in the Donbas region (eastern Ukraine).
Mariupol's' obstacle '
The conquest of the Donbas, a mining region partially controlled by pro-Russian separatists, would provide Moscow with a continuous strip of land on the Black Sea coast to the Crimean peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014.
The major obstacle to this plan remains the town of Mariupol, which has been besieged for weeks, where the last Ukrainian forces resist entrenched in the vast Azovstal industrial complex.
The Russian Defense Ministry proposed a ceasefire so that “all units of the Ukrainian army without exception and all foreign mercenaries go out without weapons or ammunition.” But fighting continued in some areas of the city, “not only with light weapons, but also with tanks,” said Pavlo Kirilenko, governor of the Donetsk region.
In Mariupol, in addition to the fighters, there would be “at least 1,000 civilians, most of them women, children and the elderly, in underground shelters” of the factory, said the city's municipal council.
“Go away!”
The resurgence of bombing in the Donbas led the Ukrainian authorities to suspend the deployment of safe humanitarian corridors for the third consecutive day. Despite the absence of these routes, local authorities urged civilians to flee the area.
“Go away!” , said the governor of the Lugansk region, Sergey Gaidai, who on Monday noted “incessant” fighting in several cities and the loss of the small town of Kreminna, some 50 km from Kramatorsk, the de facto capital of the Donbas still under Kiev control.
“Thousands of inhabitants of Kreminna did not have time to flee and are now hostages of the Russians,” added Gaidai, whose claims about the fall of this city were contradicted by an adviser to the Ukrainian presidency.
In the neighbouring Donetsk region, the Russians are shelling “in the direction of Marinka, Ocheretyne and Avdivka,” Governor Pavlo Kirilenko reported, pointing to a “difficult but controlled” situation.
