The rainy season in which the country is going through has generated numerous emergencies in different parts of the country. Landslides, overflows and floods are all included in Colombia's daily news. In Cali, the situation is no different and one of the most important alerts is that of the Cauca river level.
Recently, local authorities reported that due to heavy rains the level of this important tributary increased, putting communities living near the river in check. It should be recalled that since the beginning of this month, the orange alert was decreed due to the high levels of the tributary.
In the past few days, the alert had decreased; however, in the last few hours the orange alert was again established in the face of the new rise in river level.
Recommendations of the Mayor's Office of Cali for high levels of the Cauca River
The Secretariat for Emergency and Disaster Risk Management recently announced that the entity is constantly monitoring the level of the Cauca River. The geographer Srahyrlandy Rocío Diaz, of this body, made some recommendations in the face of the growing tributary.
The official reported that constant monitoring of the behavior of the level in the Cauca River is being carried out, this in a work coordinated with entities such as the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Valle del Cauca (CVC), Emcali and Ideam.
Diaz reported that in the early hours of the morning there was a new increase going again to an orange alert level.
Likewise, the geographer gave several recommendations to avoid risks in the midst of this alert due to river levels, including locating belongings in high places and keeping an eye on electrical connections.
“We recommend that communities that inhabit the para humidado and the banks of the Cauca river activate community monitoring, be aware of the communications of the competent entities and in the event of an increase in the water sheet, upload their belongings to high places as well as be attentive and alert to electrical connections,” he said.
Warning about the levels of the Cauca river in other areas of the country
The rise of this river has not only alerted the authorities and the Caleña community, in other areas of the country, where this tributary passes through, they also remain alert to any emergency. This is the example of Caucasia, Antioquia, where more than 4,500 people are at risk from high water levels.
Recently, in dialogue with Caracol Radio, the mayor of Caucasia expressed his concern about the increase in the Cauca river flows caused by heavy rains in recent days, and which, so far, leave four villages in the municipality flooded.
It should be remembered that Caucasia is not the only municipality in Antioquia on alert for sudden increases due to the winter season. According to a report by the Administrative Department of Risk Management of Antioquia (Dagran), the riparian population centers located between the municipality of La Pintada and the district of Bolombolo (Venice) up to the Anzá, remain on red alert to the high levels of this tributary.
