Viviane Morales asked the Attorney General's Office to suspend registrar Alexander Vega

The former prosecutor assured in an opinion column that this would help to cope with the damage that the official's mistakes caused to the democratic system

Former Colombian Prosecutor and Former Ambassador to France of Iván Duque's government, Viviane Morales, announced in her latest opinion column for El Tiempo, entitled “Madam Prosecutor: Suspend the Registrar”, that she believes that she is the only one who has the power to remove Alexander Vega from office and restore her confidence to Colombians about the elections is Margarita Cabello.

The policy that was the presidential candidate four years ago, assured that action must be taken quickly and based on the law that gives the attorney general of the nation to make a decision that “completely eradicates the climate of suspicion that will serve any candidate to ignore his defeat.”

“Despite the seriousness of the moment, it seems that we are facing an institutional crossroads, especially if we understand that we need to act quickly. In any case, I see that there is a constitutional possibility that lies in the hands of the Attorney General of the Nation,” the article published by the Colombian media outlet reads; adding that the constitution states that if there are errors of this kind, precautionary measures can be used to prevent damage older.

In addition, he adds that the discussion is not at this time about whether there was fraud or not, but about registrar Vega assuming the consequences of his multiple errors, since this brought serious damage to the democratic system and that the evidence that has emerged supports the official's wrongdoing: “The smear and the sea of doubts that have emerged support the wrongdoing of the official: suffocate the Registrar are of the utmost seriousness because they affect the backbone of the democratic system, which consists precisely in the legitimacy of the electoral result”.

In this regard, she mentioned three people who could, for her, restore credibility to the electoral process and carry out a good execution as head of the Registry: “former Comptroller Sandra Morelli, former prosecutor Alfonso Gómez Méndez and former registrar Juan Carlos Galindo. Three names of enormous prestige.”

The Attorney General's Office has already intervened. At the beginning of April, the mechanism announced the opening of a disciplinary investigation against the registrar alleged irregularities that occurred during the legislative elections held on March 13.

Marguita Cabello, indicated that this decision was taken on the basis of repeated complaints expressed by different citizen and political sectors, and on the analysis of information carried out by the Public Ministry, which correspond to the multiple anomalies that occurred in the middle of the legislative elections.

“The investigation seeks to determine whether the registrar could commit disciplinary offenses related to alleged irregularities in state selection and recruitment and a possible omission in voting control functions and in the training of juries,” the prosecutor explained through a video.

He also indicated that the watchdog opened a preliminary inquiry to some Registrar officials into the irregularities that had occurred in the ballot registration processes or the transfer of voting stations during election day, in which the new constitution of the Congress and the single candidates of the political coalitions who will compete in the first presidential round.

On the other hand, he assured that the Elite team of the Public Prosecutor's Office, consisting of four delegated procurators, had already taken the first decisions regarding the 1,600 complaints received and 400 complaints, determining that 33 disciplinary proceedings were opened for possible irregularities committed by juries for voting, vote buying, constraint on the voter and errors in the registration of ballots.
