Russia suffered the loss of another senior officer, after the captain of a large Black Sea landing ship died in the Ukrainian war. According to the authorities in Kiev, Vladimir Putin's troops have already lost more than 21 thousand soldiers in the invasion.
Captain Alexander Chirva, commander of the large landing ship Caesar Kunikov, died from injuries sustained in a battle with Ukrainian forces, reported Sevastopol Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev.
The 370-foot long vessel, capable of carrying ten main tanks and 340 soldiers, was part of the Black Sea Fleet.
As reported by the Daily Mail, Caesar Kunikov was damaged during a Ukrainian missile attack on landing ships unloading supplies at the strategic port of Berdyansk on March 24, but it is not clear whether this was the incident that led to the captain's death.
In that shelling, the ship Orsk was hit and it is believed that Chirva and her ship participated in the rescue operation, and that the Orsk fire spread to other ships, as well as to an ammunition depot and a fuel terminal in the port.
“Today we dismissed Alexander Grigorievich Chirva,” said Governor Razvozhayev without giving further details about the circumstances of his death. “His courage, professionalism and experience saved the lives of the crew members,” he added.
The announcement came after the sinking of the Black Sea Fleet's flagship Moskva, which was hit by two Ukrainian Neptune missiles.
Chirva's death is the latest in a series of high-profile casualties for the Russian military.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the combat losses of the Russian military since the beginning of the invasion until Tuesday amount to around 20,800 people.
The authorities detailed that Russian forces lost 802 tanks, 2,063 armored combat vehicles, 386 artillery systems, 132 multiple rocket launchers, 67 air defense units, 169 aircraft, 150 helicopters, 1,495 motor vehicles, 8 ships/boats, 76 fuel tankers, 158 tactical and operational UAVs, 27 special equipment and 4 mobile missile launch systems. In addition, they noted that the calculation is complicated by the high intensity of hostilities.
