INPEC inspected the cells in the block that Gustavo Petro's brother visited in La Picota prison

The controversy generated by the visit of Juan Fernando Petro, brother of the presidential candidate for the Historical Pact, to several inmates in 'La Picota' prison sparked all kinds of comments on social networks and led Gustavo Petro to be the target of many criticisms from different political fronts, so he had to clarify what happened, without However, this did not end there, as INPEC took the decision to inspect the cells that were visited by the candidate's brother.

Members of the Immediate Reaction Command (CRI) of the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute carried out in the morning of this past Monday, April 18, a series of detailed inspections in the Ere Sur courtyard of La Picota prison. These were held in the cells of the inmates visited by Juan Fernando Petro, including those of former Senator Iván Moreno, parapolitical Álvaro 'El Gordo' García, former mayor of the city of Villavicencio Francisco Chaparro, former congressman Manuel Antonio Carebilla and the former head of the National Directorate of Narcotic drugs Carlos Albornoz.

According to some information revealed, during the inspections carried out by CRI members on the site, two laptops were found, which are not allowed in these precincts and already had expired permits. Although some reports claimed that some cell phones had been found, this was not true.

El Tiempo announced that there is an “internal fight” because Juan Fernando Petro's meetings with some of the inmates were of a reserved nature, however, the photograph of the brother of the presidential candidate that was leaked in the press would have been taken by a former senator from the Colombian coast.

On the other hand, Juan Fernando Petro confirmed to Semana that these visits were part of one of the meetings of the Interclesiastical Commission for Justice, Peace and Reconciliation. He also assured that this situation “has nothing to do with Gustavo”, but pointed out that there was talk of 'social forgiveness', one of the proposals that generated the most controversy by the candidate of the Historical Pact. “The part of social forgiveness that motivates them is to know if there could be for them (..) a reduction of penalties, after all the process that they carry...”, he said.

Gustavo Petro posted a video in which he clarified all the rumors that have emerged on social networks about the proposal of 'social forgiveness' in which some users speculated about a mass outflow of prisoners convicted of corruption. Faced with this, the presidential candidate assured that, “my Government program does not envisage a reform of justice based on the reduction of sentences. We have defended the autonomy of the judicial branch and its empowerment to the fullest. No amnesty or pardon is proposed as it now enforces us.”

This has had a huge impact on citizens, since according to the National Consulting Center for CM& News, the candidate's perception of the Historical Pact fell. Of 211 citizens in Bogotá, Medellin, Cali, Barranquilla and Bucaramanga, half said that Gustavo Petro's image worsened after the media revelation.
