Bogotá is a city that is home to hundreds of knowledge and places that, for many inhabitants and tourists, are completely unknown to this day. Therefore, in order to make them known and encourage reading, people interested in the cultural heritage of the city will find a stand aimed at this topic during the Bogotá Book Fair (Filbo) that will be held from Tuesday, April 19 to May 2.
The varied catalog of books will be made available to the publishing label of the District Institute of Cultural Heritage (IDPC), which will be located in Pavilion number 3, at the stand of the Siglo del Hombre bookstore.
Since readers will find more than 80 titles on Bogotá's traditional knowledge and places, here are eight books that you should have on your list of acquisitions if your passion is the city's heritage and culture:
Published in 2021, this title contains a selection of the ruderal vegetation that grew in the former sector that occupied the Bronx, a territory marked by conflict on the outskirts of Bogotá's historic center.
In the herbarium that, according to the Idpc, was made by “former street dwellers, researchers and knowledgeable women”, citizens will also be able to learn about the uses that were identified for each of these plants.
You can also read: Buy the ballot online and other recommendations for attending the FIlBo 2022
In this book, the authors explore the art of shoemaking in the El Restrepo neighborhood, the language of the trade, as well as “the procedures and techniques of shoe production that are transmitted generationally”.
In this Idpc publication, citizens will also find a “characterization of factory, housing, workshop and warehouse spaces” of the sector, and how they enrich Bogotá's cultural heritage.
In order to reflect on the connection between land cultivation and Bogotá's cultural heritage, the Idpc publishing label launched this title in 2022, which takes a tour of 12 orchards distributed throughout the city, which are committed to the “knowledge and practices associated with the land” in common areas of neighborhoods and buildings; museums; terraces; local enterprises, among others, in the capital.
As a bonus, readers will also find in the publication a calendar with “lunar cycles, equinoxes and solstices, which is accompanied by some recommendations for the care and maintenance of crops”.
You can also read: ABCs of 'FilBo Ciudad': what is it, why is it so important and what are its novelties at the Book Fair
Taking a tour between 1910 and 1934, this title recalls these two disappeared spaces in Bogotá, and also studies the economic and political aspects that led to the creation of Luna Park and Lake Gaitan in the city.
Through this publication, the Idpc announces the routes, harvesting, maintenance and transformation that the Sago seed goes through between the countryside and Bogotá, until it becomes the “starch with which arepas, breads, achiras and coladas are prepared, among other delicious masijos”.
The book not only seeks to publicize the trade of this crop, which has been passed down for generations, but also to promote the local conservation of these seeds and encourage the purchase of food from these small producers.
Based on 27 public parks and gardens in the city, this book introduces the actors and political references that allowed the consolidation of these leisure spaces in Bogotá, as well as the variety of flora that each of them houses.
Additionally, readers will find a map and guide to tour the city's parks and gardens.
