For the first time in Netflix history, a franchise will be adapted into a television series and a mobile game at the same time. This is Exploding Kittens, the famous card game where players deceive each other and set traps for their rivals to explode (as the name itself suggests). The explosive kittens that have entertained thousands with this board game will make their debut on television and digital video games.
According to Netflix's official announcement, the premise will give rise to an animated comedy that will feature Tom Ellis (Lucifer), Abraham Lim (The Boys), Lucy Liu (Elementary), Ally Maki (Toy Story 4), Mark Proksch (Better Call Saul) in its original voice cast ) and Sasheer Zamata (Woke). It will be titled the same as the card game and will address the eternal conflict between Heaven and Hell, which gets out of control when God and the Devil are sent to the close in the body of chubby cats.
Shane Kosakowski and Matthew Inman will serve as showrunners, while executive production will be led by Mike Judge, Greg Daniels and Dustin Davis of Bandera Entertainment; Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping of Chernin Entertainment Group; and the minds behind the franchise, Inman, creator of The Oatmeal, and Elan Lee.
The animated series comes accompanied by a mobile game on Netflix
Exploding Kittens — The Game will be a mobile game that will be available only to Netflix users without additional charges or in-app purchases. In the style of classic dynamics, players will have to draw cards to avoid exploding. The big surprise will be in the exclusive cards, which will be Radar, to reveal the position of the nearest Exploding Kitten at the top of the deck of cards; and Flip Flop, which makes it possible to reverse the order of the cards in the deck.
The theme that the cards will carry in the mobile game will be that of the same animated series with the aim of bringing the audience closer to their favorite characters and the program they saw in front of the screen. In addition, you will have the option of playing solo or against several players in a group.
“The joint development of a game and an animated series breaks new ground for Netflix,” said Mike Moon, Netflix's director of adult animation. “And we couldn't think of a better game to build a universe than Exploding Kittens, one of the most ingenious, iconic and original games of this century! Netflix is the perfect place to explore this growing franchise and we are so lucky to be working with this amazing team!”
For his part, Matthew Inman, the creative director of Exploding Kittens and creator of The Oatmeal, indicated that the “N” giant is the “only service” that could bring the card game to life. “In fact, we launched Exploding Kittens on Kickstarter as a weekend project, but our community has been the heart and soul of the company for the past six years. The new series and game will give our fans new ways to connect and interact with the franchise.”
