Spaniard Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) struck a double blow in the Alps Tour with a stage win and lead by winning the sprint in a small group on matchday three between Primiero/S. Martino di Castrozza and Lana, 154.1 km. Esteban Chaves (EF Education), was the best Colombian of the day when he arrived in the seventh box in the general table.
Bilbao (Gernika, 32 years old) knew how to revet the work of his team in the last kms, canceling the day's escape and preparing a final that the Biscayan solved by speed to put on the green jersey that accredits the leader of this race.
The Bahrain rider, winner of the stage in recent Itzilia, raised his arms in Lana, a town in the province of Bolzano, with a time of 3.56.04, at an average of 39.1 km/hour, the same as the Frenchman Romain Bardet (DSM) and the Hungarian Attila Valter (Groupama), second and third in the finish line.
In the top 10 were Esteban Chaves (EF Education), seventh, Mikel Landa, eighth, Richie Porte (Ineos) ninth and Einer Rubio (Movistar) tenth. The first leader of the race, Frenchman Bouchard, came 35 seconds from Bilbao, losing the green jersey. In the general standings, Pello Bilbao takes command, who will face the third round, with a similar mountainous profile of the second, with a 6-second lead ahead of Bardet and 12 seconds ahead of Attila Valter.
The stage had 4 long climbs, only three classified, and from the start it was lively. A getaway of eleven men, with important names such as those of Sivakov, Miguel Angel Lopez, Superman, Sivakov and Caicedo led the way to near the finish line. The ports and the platoon's response prevented the adventure from successfully reaching Lana. Within the escape, the Frenchman, until recently Russian, Pavel Sivakov (Ineos) attacked, who crowned the Passo de Medolla in the lead. His initiative reduced the advance to 4 men, along with Storer, Pernsteiner and Arensman.
The strongest of the quartet were Sivakov and Storer, who led the way to 30 from the finish line, to crown the Passo delle Palade (12.9 km to 4.1 percent) and make the descent together. In the relegation, Bahrain de Pello Bilbao and Mikel Landa took responsibility within the chasing squad, who were also carrying two other teammates.
Bilbao pulled the manual of the art of descending ports, took the lead and gradually settled differences between Sivakov and Storer until they canceled their intentions to win 10 km from the finish line. Then the gernikarra was already a virtual leader with Bouchard off the hook.
On a flat end and a last kilometre on a slight climb, Bahrain moved its troops with success. The fight was served by the stage triumph and the leader's jersey. The candidates, Pello Bilbao and Bardet. The absolute majority in the group of 25 that was played in the sprint was clear to Bahrain, with 4 luxury pawns. The Colombian Santiago Buitrago launched the sprint, relieved him in the climb, to 500 from the finish, Mikel Landa, and when he appeared in the absence of 200 Pello Bilbao he went to sign a beautiful ensemble work.
