The COVID-19 pandemic has not yet ended, but important progress has already been made in its control. Since the arrival of vaccines in February 2021, efforts have been made to ensure that more and more citizens go to vaccination centers to protect themselves and the rest of the population from the virus that kept us locked up for several weeks. So far, and with the application of a third dose under way, only nine districts of the 43 that make up Metropolitan Lima exceed 80% of the population vaccinated with the booster dose.
Barranco, Cercado de Lima, Surquillo and San Miguel occupy the top four places on the list. It should be recalled that the third dose was announced as a measure to combat the spread of Omicron, the variant of COVID-19 that was characterized by its ease of infecting the population. Jesús María is 81%, but Pueblo Libre, Magdalena del Mar, Lince and Breña barely reach 80% of their population vaccinated with the doses required so far by the authorities.
Regarding the vulnerable population, the Ministry of Health has reported that 72.7% already have the third dose, achieving 14,837,580 citizens in all regions of the country count on the reinforcement. This data is also interpreted as if 51.9% of the general population have received the three doses indicated. It should be recalled that the government has already launched the application of the fourth dose for those over 70 years of age, starting five months after the last application of the vaccine.
SITUATIONAL ROOM
The COVID-19 pandemic is still present in our country, even though the third wave of contagion caused by the presence of the omicron variant. According to the Situational Room of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), over the past 24 hours, 69 new infections were registered and 10 compatriots lost their lives due to the coronavirus. During that time period, 45,120 people were tested nationwide.
The number of people hospitalized rises to 1,106 because of the virus that triggered this pandemic. Of these, 371 are hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) being treated with mechanical ventilation. More than 3 million people have been in home isolation since the start of the pandemic, according to the Ministry of Health.
Since March 2020, more than 25 million Peruvians have been tested for coronavirus, of which 3,539,210 were confirmed cases. 212,654 is the total number, so far, of compatriots who have died due to COVID-19 since the virus was first registered on national territory.
In order to stop infections, the government maintains the recommendation to respect the physical distancing of at least one meter between people. He urges the population to constantly wash their hands, wear masks that are, preferably, KN95. In addition, the presentation of the vaccination card is required to enter certain enclosed spaces. Citizens over the age of 18 must prove that they have received three doses of the vaccine if they wish to go to restaurants, theaters, banks, shopping centers, cinemas, among others. The measure seeks to encourage the closure of vaccination gaps in order to protect the largest number of citizens from the virus that still claims the lives of several Peruvians.
