5.0 earthquake in Michoacán: why did not sound the seismic alert in Mexico City

Although, according to information from the Mexican Seismic Warning System, the event did not warrant the loudspeakers being activated, the tremor was reported in the Benito Juárez, Coyoacán, Azcapotzalco, Miguel Hidalgo and Gustavo A. Madero mayors.

On April 19, the National Seismological Service (SSN) reported that at 7:44am there was an earthquake southwest of Ciudad Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacan of magnitude 5.0 and with a depth of 15 kilometers.

However, the seismic warning was not activated in the central area of Mexico. According to the government of Mexico City, the accident did not merit the activation of the speakers, despite this, the earthquake originating in Michoacán was felt in some regions of central Mexico. Some of the mayors where Tuesday's 5.4 earthquake was reported were Benito Juárez, Coyoacán, Azcapotzalco, Miguel Hidalgo and Gustavo A. Madero.

In addition, according to comments on social networks, the movement was also perceived in several states such as Michoacán, State of Mexico and Morelos. This is explained because the possible effect did not exceed the levels considered by the alert system to qualify it as strong.

It should be noted that the Mexican Seismic Alarm System (SASMEX) issues two types of seismic warning: a public one when an earthquake greater than six degrees is expected with strong effects, and another preventive one for moderate earthquakes between five and six degrees.

The Seismic Warning system that operates in the country depends on the Center for Instrumentation and Seismic Recording (CIRES), which detects earthquakes in the Guerrero Breach in order to issue warnings 50 seconds in advance.

It should be noted that the warning system works with seismic sensors, which calculate parameters used to forecast a strong earthquake close to its coverage radius, which parameters are sent by radio to computer systems (located in cities where the alert arrives, for example: Mexico City, Toluca and Oaxaca).

As it is located in an area of high seismicity, the National Seismological System reports in the country, on average, the occurrence of 4 earthquakes per day of magnitude less than 3.0.

According to the latest Monthly Summary of Seismicity of the National Seismological Service, 2,191 tremors with epicenters were reported within Mexican territory.

The magnitudes of the seismic events ranged from 1.0 to 5.7. The epicenters are distributed throughout much of Mexico with a strong concentration in the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima, Jalisco, on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and in the Gulf of California.

The largest earthquake of the month was magnitude 5.7 and occurred on March 3 at 8:40am. The epicenter of this event was located 14 km north of the Isla municipality in the state of Veracruz.

Returning to the earthquake recorded on April 19, according to Civil Protection of Mexico, so far no damage has been reported in the states where this event was perceived and the risk of wave variations on the Pacific coast has been ruled out, so there is no risk to the operation of ports and other activities of the population.

It should be recalled that the main measures following major seismic activity, according to the National Center for Disaster Prevention (Conapred), are to check if there was possible structural damage in the place where you live and to avoid lighting candles or matches in anticipation of a possible gas leak resulting from the earthquake.

In addition, he recommends being alert, because after an earthquake of magnitude, there may be aftershocks of lesser or greater intensity.
