Over the weekend, a video was released of a reckless driver of a van who put the lives of several travelers at risk on the roads of the department of Bolivar. The owner of the vehicle has already been identified and the person is expected to be found to determine if he was the one who committed the traffic regulations violation.

The incident took place on the Western Troncal Road on April 16. At the height of the municipality of San Juan Nepomuceno, a bus and two tractors were moving. Despite the double line, another tractor formula tried to overtake the vehicles, a maneuver prohibited on that route and that led it to invade part of the opposite lane.

While that vehicle was overtaking, a Toyota pickup truck and Frontier model with FUS-125 plates made the same move. That is, he overtook the two vehicles in a double yellow line, at high speed and without leaving any space for the opposite lane, even invading the berm.

A driver traveling in the overrun lane, seeing the situation, had to brake on the side of the road to avoid colliding with the van. “Know that it was a short time to erase a beautiful family,” wrote the complainant who recorded the event to denounce.

General Nicolás Zapatam, commander of the police in Bolivar, said in a dialogue with Noticias Caracol that thanks to the number on the license plate, the owner of the vehicle was identified. This is a man identified as Eder Padilla Núñez, who is a resident of Monteria.

Authorities have already identified that the owner of the Frontier van lives in a residential complex in the city, but so far he has not been able to contact. He is expected to access the authorities to determine the responsibilities of the recklessness committed.

Captain César Galván, commander of the Bolivar Highway Police, explained to the newspaper El Tiempo that thanks to the video that was recorded by a camera integrated into the complainant's vehicle, it is possible to identify the offense.

Likewise, with this video it is possible to punish the offender. However, it must first be established who was the person who was driving the van and who would be responsible, both for overtaking in a double line and for dangerous maneuver, which could be the violations imposed by the authorities.

But it is not only the driver of the Toyota van, but also the driver of the tractomulla who performed the same maneuver on a route where overtaking is prohibited.

The newspaper La Razón, for its part, reported that according to Major Neider Morantes Ortiz, chief of the Traffic and Transport Section of the Monteria Metropolitan Police, the driver of the van had been identified and punished with a D60 fine equivalent to a minimum wage.

The Ministry of Transport provided the figures of the balance of mobility on national roads during the travel season that represents the festive weekend celebrating the major week. Although casualties with fatalities showed a reduction, a single life lost is cause for reproach, according to Minister Angela María Orozco.

Between Wednesday 13 and Sunday 17 April, when the holiday season began, 41 deaths were recorded due to accidents, according to the preliminary report of the Police Traffic and Transport Directorate. This figure is 25% lower than in the same period in 2021, when the victims of road accidents were 55 people. The number of injured people went from 1036 last year to 928 in 2022.

The director of the National Road Safety Agency, Luis Lota, called on drivers to “avoid risks on the roads, to drive responsibly and to prevent behaviors that endanger others in order to promote safe mobility”.

According to Major General Juan Alberto Libreros, Director of Traffic and Transport National Police, 107 deaths were recorded in road accidents in the total of the week, a 49% reduction compared to last year. There was a 17% increase in mobility compared to last year, which mobilized 9,630,374 vehicles nationwide. The accident rate was reduced by 11%.
