On April 10, player Freddy Eusebio Rincón suffered an accident that cost him his life and mourned Colombian football. As the days went by, details have come out about what happened before the car I was riding in crashed into a bus from Mio in Cali.

According to El Tiempo, Rincón was at the house of salsa musician Harol Saa on April 10, where he was from noon to 11:00pm, as confirmed by Saa. Also on site was Diana Lorena Cortés (one of the occupants of the vehicle at the time of the accident in the early morning of Monday).

After the end of the day of Colombian football, Rincón went to a disco.

“I think (they went) to 'The Bronxs' because Freddy invited her, along with the others,” said the musician in the country of Cali.

The Bronx, which is only eight blocks from the scene of the accident, was one of the former footballer's favorites as he was always a fan of salsa.

Vladimir Mosquera was also in the musician's apartment and assured that Rincon hadn't had a drink until the moment he left.

Saa assured that the other companion, 20-year-old Maria Manuela Patiño, was a young woman that Rincón met at the nightclub.

“I understand it was someone they met there (in the disco) because the two girls who came with Freddy were jealous when he started talking to someone and left. I think she may be the person Freddy was talking to,” Saa said of Patiño.

Last Monday, April 11, in the early hours of the morning, the traffic accident occurred in the capital of Valle del Cauca. The van crossed a red light and was hit by a feeder car from the MÍO (mass transport system), the balance left by four people injured, one of them seriously. The most affected was Freddy Eusebio Rincón, who had to be transferred to the Imbanaco Clinic, where despite the efforts made by the medical staff, he died.

Laureano Quintero, chief physician of the hospital center, reported the news at an extraordinary press conference: “The Imbanaco Clinic, in the presence of his relatives and with their full authorization, allows us to report that despite all the efforts of our work teams Fredy Eusebio Rincón Valencia has died. We want to express our sincere feelings of condolences to their family, friends, relatives and followers around the globe.”

He added, “there will never be a way to express to them what it feels like to lose one of our patients, whoever it is. We ask everyone to honor and exalt the life of Freddy Eusebio for all the joys he brought us, for everything that made us vibrate many times from many corners of this planet thanks to his wonderful display of life and his wonderful sporting display. Let's honor his life as he deserves it.”

Rincón was born in Buenaventura on August 14, 1966. He started playing in the neighborhood and then began a successful sports career at Atlético Buenaventura. There he was discovered by one of the shareholders of Independiente Santa Fe, who took him to Bogotá, where he made his professional debut.

In 1986 he began his professional football career with Independiente Santa Fe, where he stayed until 1989, when América de Cali took over his services. In the scarlet team he won two titles and scored several goals during the Copa Libertadores.

From La Mecha he jumped to Palmeiras: thanks to his technique he led him to win two titles in 1994. His time with the Brazilian team catapulted him to Europe, with Napoli he played Serie A. Between 94 and 95 he played 28 matches (27 as a starter, of which in 23 he played the 90 minutes) and scored seven goals (double to Padova, double to Lazio and both Reggiana, Cremonese and Genoa).

After the good season, Rincón became the first Colombian to sign with Real Madrid after the call of Jorge Valdano. The one born in Buenaventura came after a transaction of 4 million euros. Despite his quality as a footballer, Rincón failed to adapt to the merengue team, so he passed without pity or glory, playing only 21 games, 13 as a starter and only four in the 90 minutes. Later, he arrived at Corinthians where he became an idol until the date of his retirement as a professional player to take the coaching route.

The 55-year-old former midfielder is remembered for his score against Germany at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, which allowed the Tricolor to qualify for the first time in the round of the international competition.
