For the Parliamentary Group of Citizen Movement, the Electric Reform proposed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will not be approved this Sunday, March 17, because “we are in the majority who are against it,” said MC MP María Teresa Ochoa Mejía.
In an interview with Infobae Mexico, the also law graduate commented that, if such a reform were approved, constitutional balances would be eliminated and economic competition would be directly affected, since the National Hydrocarbons Commission and the Energy Regulatory Commission would disappear.
According to Deputy Mejía, this would be reflected in the increase in consumers' electricity bills, even though President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has reiterated that the Electricity Reform will not affect the economy of the Mexican population.
“The president is lying when he says that the light will not go up,” Ochoa Mejia said. He added that the position of the Citizen Movement has always been focused on caring for the environment and the non-use of fossil materials. “We are seeing the promotion of the use of fuel oil, coal and other highly polluting energy sources,” he said.
Regarding the departure of Deputy Andrés Pintos Caballero, Ochoa Mejía commented that, as a Parliamentary Group, they welcome anyone who is consistent with what they say and what they do. “If there are deputies who have the interest and are consistent with their cause, the doors of the Citizen Movement are always open,” he said.
Prior to the discussion of the Electricity Reform in the Chamber of Deputies, Pintos Caballero reported that he discharged from the Green Ecologist Party to join the ranks of MC. With this, it is expected that their vote will be against this reform, as will the rest of the orange bench.
“Let's hope to make history with this Electric Reform, which we want to stop using fossil materials,” he concluded. Like Ochoa Mejía, opposition deputies (PAN, PRI, PRD) have reiterated that their vote will be against this reform. In order to secure their vote, some spent the night on the outskirts of San Lazaro in front of the bloc announced by Morena's militants.
For this reform to be approved, two thirds of the total votes are needed, so that the alliance of the so-called Fourth Transformation (Q4) would need the vote in favor of 57 deputies from other parties, since it only has 277 legislators to reach the required 334.
It is worth mentioning that the Electricity Reform initiative seeks to make the CFE the State agency responsible for the strategic area of electricity, which would result in the cancellation of the electricity generation permits that have been granted, as well as the contracts for the purchase and sale of electricity.
