On the morning of Sunday, April 17, the 119th edition of the French Paris-Roubaix cycling race will take place.
It will be a total of 257.2 kilometers that will separate the towns of Compiègne and Roubaix. The race is part of the UCI WorldTour 2022, the world's highest cycling calendar, and is part of the 16th round of this circuit.
This is one of the most iconic and traditional races in international cycling. The circuit is renowned for its demanding cobblestones and the difficulty of the terrain, which makes it a rather disputed conquest among the riders, since every year there are many retreats of competitors and many fail to cross the finish line in the stipulated average time.
For this event, 25 teams were registered, which is reflected in 171 total cyclists registered, of which Colombia will have its representative, Juan Sebastián Molano, as a member of the UAE Team Emirates.
Of the total journey, cyclists will have to travel 54.8 kilometers of cobblestones, which are divided into 30 sectors. While receiving the news about his call by the Asian team, Molano gave his expectations and thanked the opportunity to perform on the roads of the French country in the one-day competition:
The Colombian runner will be accompanied by Pascal Ackerman, Alexys Brunel, Felix Gross, Vegard Stake Laengen, Matteo Trentin and Oliveiro Troia.
The native of Paipa, Boyacá, has come from having physical mishaps, a fact that has prevented him from finishing his last four races: Flecha Brabanzona, Amstel Gold Race, Scheldeprijs and the Tour of Catalonia.
In addition, the 27-year-old cyclist suffered a sharp fall in the Vuelta al Algarve that forced him to withdraw from the race. For this reason, the boyacense hopes to change the bad luck that has accompanied him at the beginning of the year.
On the other hand, Juan Sebastián is optimistic in view of the fact that on other occasions as a professional he has recorded good performances that have consolidated him in the Emirati training. He was eleventh in the Milan-Turin, fifth in the Almeria Classic and second in the Playa de Palma-Palma Trophy.
The race known as El Infierno del Norte will have a 'soft' start of almost 100 kilometers flat, on the road. At kilometer 111, the hard part begins when the platoon reaches 'Troisville to Inchy'. There they will find a 2.2 kilometre stretch of third difficulty cobblestones.
From then on, cyclists will face increasingly demanding pieces of cobblestone, such as the 'Mons-en-Pevele' (2.98 kilometres of pavé).
Among the latest winners of the competition are the following runners:
2021: Sonny Colbrelli, italiano (Bahrain Victorious).
2020: It was not disputed because of the covid-19 pandemic.
2019: Philippe Gilbert, Belgium (Deceuninck Quick Step).
2018: Peter Sagan, Slovak (Bora-Hansgrohe).
2017: Greg Van Avermaet, belga (BMC Racing).
2016: Mathew Hayman, australiano (Orica-GreenEDGE).
