They captured suspected thieves of TransMilenio, fell to the accomplice

Authorities arrested two men and an 18-year-old woman who, prior to their capture, had committed theft at the 85th Street station

The Bogotá Police succeeded in the capture of three people accused of stealing at the TransMilenio station on Calle 85. According to him, a 23-year-old man, with a knife stole two people's cell phones and fled the scene. While leaving, he was looking for his accomplices, who were on the way out to the west, the authorities report.

Another 28-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman were waiting for him in a blue car to escape, with BHV 131 plates. Colonel Salvador Mesa, inspection officer of the Bogotá Metropolitan Police, gave details of the event: “Through voices of help at the TransMilenio station on 85th Street, several people alert the police quadrant of the Polo Club sector, where minutes earlier two cell phones had been stolen from TransMilenio users. Through patrolling, the quadrant manages to intercept a vehicle, which, inside it were 2 males and one female; in addition, their cell phones were found, which minutes earlier had been stolen. These 3 persons and the vehicle were left at the disposal of the competent authority.”

A few days ago, the Mayor's Office of Bogotá, together with the Police, delivered a report stating that nearly 50,000 cases of theft were recorded in the city so far in 2022. It represented an increase of 7.6%, compared to 2021. In March alone, it is estimated that more than 18,000 robberies were committed, for the time being, the month with the highest number of cases recorded.

The report said that the Bogotá Metropolitan Police have captured 3,010 people who allegedly committed theft, many of them are caught in flagrante. The security secretary of Bogotá, Aníbal Fernández de Soto, said that the modalities where there has been an increase are in the theft of people and vehicles, which have increased by 13% and 8% respectively. In addition, the figures show that approximately half of all thefts are committed in the middle of public roads; also, two out of ten cases are used firearms or sharps, with the intention of intimidating citizens.

It should be noted that the days where the most thefts are reported are Fridays and Saturdays: in eight out of ten cases, they are commented on foot, but most of them escape by motorcycle. In this regard, the authorities recorded 6,652 motorcycle thefts, that is, about 70 cases, of the almost 550 robberies committed per day, in Bogotá.

In order to reduce insecurity, some measures that apply to motorcyclists, issued in Decree 119, will begin to apply on 21 April: restriction of companion man from 7pm to 4am on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. T he Ministry of Security also formed an immediate reaction group with the Police, whose aim will be to have a more effective response to any security situation.

“A special motorized reaction group was formed, in which ten professional motorized police officers, equipped with all the necessary elements, will carry out deterrence and containment activities, at portals and stations where there is greater criminal conduct,” reported the District. And he pointed out that the uniformed will be at the whereabouts and will provide support in the busiest places. In total, there are 650 agents who will be on 5 TransMilenio portals, stations with the greatest number of traffic and some police stations that are prioritized by the authorities.
